Facing skyrocketing costs to buy and rent in Southwest Florida, Sean and Erin's dream of homeownership seemed unreachable. They moved in with family and waited out the market, but it wasn't until partnering with Habitat that hope became a reality. The couple met regularly with a housing counselor, completed 300 hours of sweat equity, attended more than 20 hours of homeownership education classes, and paid $2,000 toward closing costs. Sean and Erin celebrated their home dedication in May and officially closed on their home on July 23, just after welcoming their newborn. Back in 2020, we became parents and we realized we could not afford to keep renting on top of having to pay for childcare, even with both of us working. So we decided to move in with family to try and save some money because our goal ultimately was to own a home. We were ready to look for housing, but things were not in our price range. We thought we could wait it out, wait out the market, wait out the market. But then Hurricane Ian happened. And anything that was just barely out of our price range evaporated and was number more or was underwater. So we came to Habitat really desperate to try and find some sort of option for affordable housing for our family. So Sean almost was working two jobs basically for a while he would work his day job and then on all of his off time was working Habitat hours to try and help get us the 300 in the time frame that we had all of it was in. Construction because while I do a little bit of a similar work in my job. I knew that I could learn very valuable skills getting to work on South, many different houses. Just so long it's been, this is just temporary, we can do it, it's just temporary. And now we no longer have to say it's temporary. This is where our kids will grow up. They can really have a foundation to come home to. We were very, very glad that we were able to partner with them. There's so much more that Habitat is able to do, even just pointing in the right direction to get you started. That we never would have known was available.
