Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat for Humanity’s mission. Among them is Larry, a snowbird who spends winters in Lee County with his wife. He has dedicated 175 hours of volunteer time with us since January 2024. Larry was instrumental in enhancing the accessibility of our South Fort Myers ReStore and played a crucial role in the reopening of our Hurricane Ian-damaged North Fort Myers location. Now back in Minnesota, Larry's flights are already booked to return to Lee County in December. "The day after we arrive, I’ll be at the store,” he said, looking forward to volunteering at the ReStores again. “I told my wife, ‘This is about the greatest thing I think I've ever done.’” 👉 Read more about Larry's role in our ReStores and overall mission: https://lnkd.in/ew-MD_XE 🗣 Comment below and share your volunteering experience with us!

Green Builders: Join the Movement to Rebuild Western North Carolina Sustainably In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, communities across Western North Carolina are facing devastating losses. As we come together to support the recovery, it’s vital that we consider the long-term impacts of how we rebuild, focusing on sustainable and green practices. With climate change continuing to fuel extreme weather events like this, rebuilding with resilience and environmental responsibility is not just an option, it’s a necessity. If you or your team is interested in lending support through your expertise, resources, or services, I’d love to connect and explore ways we can help these communities recover in a way that aligns with the values of sustainability. Feel free to reach out to schedule a time to talk about how you can contribute, or to learn more about direct involvement. Together, we can ensure the future we build is greener and more resilient. For those looking to provide immediate relief, we’ve also set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for emergency supplies. Your support, or even just sharing the link, would mean a lot to those affected. https://gofund.me/7077925c

As most of you know, Hurricane Helene has caused significant damage, particularly in Florida and North Carolina. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who checked in, and I feel fortunate to be outside the direct path of Helene and Milton. However, with Hurricane Milton expected to make landfall Wednesday evening as a Category 5 storm, my thoughts are with those tragically impacted just a few hours north of South Florida. While I’m uncertain of the weather we’ll face in Miami, I know there are many others who will need your thoughts, prayers, and support more than I will. If you’re looking for ways to help, here’s what FEMA recommends: Volunteer: Sign up with reputable organizations such as the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD). They know where volunteers are needed and can ensure your efforts are effective and safe. Donate to relief organizations: Consider supporting groups helping hurricane victims in Florida and North Carolina, such as Caring For Others, Feeding America, Global Empowerment Mission, Ground Force Humanitarian Aid, Mercy Chefs, American Red Cross, and many others. Identify what is needed: Before donating supplies, check what’s actually needed. Unsolicited goods may not meet the needs of survivors. Avoid traveling to affected areas: While well-intentioned, unplanned travel can add strain on response efforts. Recovery lasts long after the media attention fades, and there will be opportunities to help in the coming months and years. Stay safe, let’s support those who need it most, and please share any other ways to help in the comments below! #Community #HurricaneHelene #HurricaneMilton #Florida #NorthCarolina #Volunteer #Donate

We have been closely monitoring the effects of Hurricane Helene across the Southeast and in particular western North Carolina. Many of us at the Foundation have deeply personal connections with this part of our state, and the devastation has been hard to process. We have been able to contact some community partners in the region, and they are in the process of performing a needs assessment for how best to provide support at this time. What we know: there are services on the ground that are tending to the immediate relief needs of those impacted. What we also know: recovery is going to be a months-long effort, at least. People and organizations are going to need our support in the coming weeks to ensure that residents of these areas are taken care of. As with any crisis or disaster that affects a part of our state or country outside our region, we rely on and refer to our community foundation partners that are best-equipped to know the nonprofits on the ground providing important relief and recovery efforts. As soon as supports are in place we will share them.

As Hurricane Helene barrels toward the Florida Panhandle, the American Red Cross is working closely with partners and officials across Florida and Georgia to finalize response plans and urges everyone to make their storm preparations now. ⚠️The Red Cross is rapidly mobilizing some 360 trained disaster workers - including several from #WNY, truckloads of supplies and dozens of shelters to help people in Florida and Georgia in the face of Helene. ⚠️ Red Crossers are preparing dozens of evacuation shelters along the Florida Panhandle. More shelter teams are on stand-by in case they are needed. In addition to trailers of disaster supplies pre-positioned earlier this year, the Red Cross is preparing some 30,000 snacks and 15,000 ready-to-eat meals, as well as emergency response vehicles. ⚠️Find evacuation shelters at RedCross.org, download the free Red Cross Emergency app or call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). ⚠️You can also help support communities facing potentially life-threatening impacts by making a financial donation, or an appointment to donate blood or platelets by visiting RedCross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). #HurricaneHelene #RedCross #DisasterRelief #BloodDonation #Volunteer
