Rethinking the UK's Response to Extremism The UK government's recent update on its approach to combating extremism, including a revised definition and a notable stance on banning extremists from government meetings and funding, has sparked an interesting debate. While the intent behind these measures is clear, their effectiveness is up for discussion. Extremist groups, whether rooted in so-called Islamist ideologies or right-wing supremacism, have shown little interest in engaging with governmental structures. Their operations, fueled by decentralized networks and digital platforms, rely less on government interaction and more on grassroots support and online proliferation. This brings us to a critical point: By focusing on barring these groups from government resources, are we truly addressing the core of the problem? Or are we overlooking the autonomous and adaptive nature of modern extremism? The reality is that extremism today thrives beyond the reach of government meetings and funding. It's a complex issue that demands a multifaceted approach, including community engagement, digital vigilance, and a deep dive into the socio-economic conditions that foster such ideologies. As we continue this conversation, let's think about how we can collectively devise more effective strategies to tackle extremism in its current form. Your thoughts and insights on this are invaluable. #Extremism #UKGovernment #CounterExtremismStrategy #publicpolicy

Is a new definition of extremism the answer to rising extremism and division in the UK? Absolutely not. Implementation of the definitions and strategies we already have is a must alongside: A unit that tracks and prevents entry to hate preachers, implementation of my report into Antisemitism in schools in 2022 (in the main that included taking the teaching of Antisemitism out of the history class and teaching on its contemporary manifestation), robust and proactive support to schools around protests and teaching young people to engage with democracy. There is more to add but here are just a few starting points as to what really is needed to curb extremism. A new definition is simply a ploy for votes and very disappointing. https://lnkd.in/e_s-WVwC

What is the new definition of extremism? It says extremism is "the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to: 1. negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or 2. undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or 3. intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve the results in (1) or (2)" The government said it was "narrower and more precise" than the previous definition, which was introduced in 2011. https://lnkd.in/dcx2wJ_N

Amid the recent far-right riots in the UK, it is timely to explore the diverse ideological underpinnings that drive these movements. While the term "far-right" is often used as a broad descriptor, it is crucial to recognize that these groups are not monolithic. Each far-right organization is propelled by a distinct combination of ideologies, grievances, and modes of action. As discussed in the post, these groups are shaped by various narratives. For instance, the English Defence League, though officially defunct, had former members actively participating in the 2024 riots. Their ideology was characterized by a blend of Anti-Muslim Populism, Counter-Jihad Conspiracy Theory, and Ultra-Patriotism. Similarly, Britain First, another group involved in the 2024 unrest, is driven by Anti-Muslim Populism, Ultra-Nationalism, and Christianist sentiments. Understanding these nuances is vital, as it underscores the need for tailored approaches in dismantling these harmful ideologies. In my subsequent post, I will outline strategies that practitioners can employ to develop and deploy counter-narratives to effectively combat the messages of violent far-right extremism. William Allchorn who contributed to our book, provides additional insights. The book titled ‘A Research Agenda for Far Right Violence and Extremism’ edited by Katalin Pethö-Kiss and myself recommends approaches and strategies to mitigate far-right violence and extremism. Lawful Extremism: Extremist Ideology and the Dred Scott Decision - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gwJrrCZh Can legal codes and court rulings function as extremist ideological texts? Academics usually define extremism as a set of beliefs that fall outside the norms of the society in which they are situated, but entire societies have at times been organized around recognizably extreme beliefs. This paper will examine the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Scott v. Sandford, 60 US 393 (1856), more commonly known as the Dred Scott decision. Widely considered the worst Supreme Court decision of all time, the opinion written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney decreed that Black people, whether enslaved or free, could never become citizens of the United States and that they had no rights under the Constitution. This paper will analyze the Dred Scott decision to consider whether and how it implements and institutionalizes many widely recognized tropes of extremist ideology. The paper will conclude with a discussion of empirical frameworks that can enable and empower the study of lawful extremism. #LawfulExtremism #DredScott #citizenship #WhiteSupremacy #constitutionalrights #nativism #RacialIdeology #USSlavery #SCOTUS #AfricanAmericans #FugitiveSlaveLaw
