Knowledge is Power, Especially for Renovation 🏡 As One Stop Shops (OSS) or Resource Centres become mandatory for every 80,000 EU Citizens - since the revised EPBD - the design of these information services is crucial for successful energy initiatives that address energy poverty by putting communities first. ComActivate Project identifies several factors that determine success. Read more in our report here: https://lnkd.in/dxbYT3GB

The last federal budget supported a national energy efficiency program for low-to-moderate Canadians. We have an opportunity to design that program to play a long-term role in securing Canadians against energy poverty. In a Policy Options article Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP) Abigail Jackson and me have a few ideas on how to make the program work 1) Develop and enhance local energy-efficiency programs 2) Streamline the application and administrative processes 3) Empower renters and provide them with adequate support 4) Create predictability for the retrofit market https://lnkd.in/gYrQXBnf

Collaboration is key to addressing energy poverty. 💡Deep retrofits are the key pathway to homes that are healthier, safer, more resilient to extreme weather, and more affordable to heat & cool. Our report recommends coordinated efforts between federal, provincial, and utility sectors to support retrofit programs for low-income households. Learn more 👇

Horizon Magazine published my interview! We keep on working on #energyefficiency to tackle #energypoverty in #socialhouses with our SUPER-i & SUPERSHINE projects partners, applying the New European Bauhaus in our lighthouses and fellows.
Upgrading social housing is a central part of EU projects to make city life healthier and happier: ‘When we talk about energy poverty, we have to think not only about how you buy energy and its sources but also about how to use it efficiently’ (Riccardo Coletta, APRE - Agenzia per la Promozione della Ricerca Europea) Thanks to Horizon Magazine for featuring #SUPERSHINE_eu! The energy minister recently announced new regulations requiring all rental properties to meet an EPC band C standard by 2030. 🔌💡 The article highlights: ▶️The initiative is crucial for addressing fuel poverty, improved energy efficiency will help reduce energy bills for tenants, especially in low-income households. ▶️ An estimated 2.4 million households in England alone live in fuel poverty. These changes aim to reduce that number significantly. ▶️Landlords will be incentivised to make the required changes to meet the new standards. Deep energy efficiency retrofits are the only lasting way to address energy affordability, and they come with a host of health and resilience benefits too. It's imperative that all levels of government invest in retrofits for lower-income households that face unaffordable energy bills. Everyone has the right to be healthy and comfortable in their home.

Pembina shows the potential scale of the low-income retrofit challenge, so let's get started! Bringing the affordability benefits of building retrofits to lower income houses and apartments requires removing up-front costs and other barriers linked to energy poverty, while achieving the deeper energy savings that meaningfully reduce costs. In the upcoming federal budget, the government can align its climate policy with affordability by making a significant investment in energy efficiency for low-to-moderate income Canadians.

Do you like graphs? Well, the annual DESNZ UK Energy in Brief report has over 40 of them! Here's my pick - progress towards hitting the 2030 fuel poverty target for England, which was set back in 2014. It's good to see that the vast majority of low income households are no longer in really inefficient (E-G rated) properties. But we need to make some progress on those Ds, and quickly. Looking forward to the upcoming Warm Homes Plan to set out how this will be achieved! Report available here: https://lnkd.in/g-9x9UeG

Energy poverty affects 1 in 10 Europeans, with the #energycrisis worsening the situation. Renovating the 'worst-performing buildings' first can help those most impacted by high energy bills. 💸 We urge the European Commission to prioritize an "envelope first" approach in EPBD Implementation Guidelines. Energy-efficient buildings lower bills, reduce energy poverty, and enhance grid stability. ⚡ Let's put #EnergyEfficiencyFirst and create a sustainable future together. 🤝 #EnvelopeFirst #GreenDeal #Sustainability #ForABetterWorld
1 out of 10 Europeans is affected by energy poverty. These numbers have been steadily on the rise since the beginning of the #energycrisis. ⚡ By starting renovations with the 'worst-performing buildings', the buildings that waste the most energy, we prioritise people living in energy poverty. It is often the poorest people who live in these buildings, and who are most impacted by high energy bills. 💸 As the European Commission drafts the upcoming EPBD Implementation Guidelines, we call for an approach that puts #energyefficiencyfirst. Prioritising building envelope improvements is the first step to tackling energy poverty, reducing household bills and facilitating the integration of renewables at once. 🤝 Join us, Construction Products Europe aisbl, EAE | European Association for External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS), EPPA - The European PVC Window Profiles and related Building Products Association, Eurogypsum, Glass for Europe, and PU Europe in ensuring that the next steps of the #EPBD are both in the right direction and in the right order for a #GreenDeal that leaves no one behind. 🇪🇺 European Commission Ditte J.
