Heartbreaking new figures show that 151,630 children are now living in temporary accommodation, as the number of households in these precarious situations has surged to 117,450. Even more concerning, over 5,500 families are stuck in B&Bs (bed and breakfast's), often beyond the legal 6-week limit. With so many empty public buildings across the country, we have the resources to help but only if we act now. A united effort is needed to provide both temporary and permanent homes: https://lnkd.in/e52Tjd7M #ESTHer #EmptySpacesToHomes #HousingCrisis #UKHousing

For some reason we assume that all young people should be fine living in shared accommodation. While this may be true for most students, young professionals and other young people, there are many reasons why shared accommodation might not be safe or appropriate for some young people. This is especially true for young people with lived experience of homelessness or abuse. For these young people, a space to call their own is a real life line. But unfortunately the Single Accommodation Cap blocks young people getting Housing Benefit from the option of living alone until they are 35! We think this is phenomenally unfair. That's why ending the cap is step 4 in our #PlanForThe136k policy checklist. You can see the checklist and share it with your MP on our campaign website: https://buff.ly/4d3H7oX

Did you know? Airdrie’s 2024 Housing Needs Assessment sheds light on a crucial reality: single-parent households, seniors and young adults are among the groups most in need of affordable housing options. Offering diverse and affordable housing options isn’t just about providing roofs over heads; it’s about fortifying communities. Implementing Airdrie’s 2024 – 2030 Principled Affordable Housing Action Plan is pivotal in fostering an inclusive community with a wide range of housing choices for all residents. Be an advocate for inclusivity and learn how affordable housing transforms lives at https://lnkd.in/gkEWuvXi. Together, we can build a community where everyone belongs. #Affordablehousing #HousingForAll #Airdrie *Information included in the infographic (below) was taken from 2021. We know that costs have only increased since then.

Increasing Security Standards, Mitigating Risk & Reducing Shrink as the Director @ Protection Security Investigations
The recent report by Federal Housing Advocate Marie-Josée Houle, calling for urgent action on Canada's tent encampments, shines a light on a dire human rights crisis. With an estimated 20-25% of Canada's homeless population living in encampments, Houle's push for a national response plan by Aug. 31 is a call to action we cannot ignore. Houle's report isn't just statistics; it's a testament to a systemic failure in providing for the most vulnerable. Encampments are not a choice but a last resort for many facing the harsh realities of poverty, lack of affordable housing, and systemic barriers. The advocate’s emphasis on providing basic necessities and working towards long-term housing solutions recognizes the dignity and rights of those affected. This isn't a problem that can be swept under the rug with temporary fixes or further criminalization. It demands a coordinated effort across all levels of government, grounded in the lived experiences of those it aims to help. It's time for a paradigm shift in how we address homelessness in Canada, moving from punitive measures to proactive, compassionate, and rights-based solutions. As professionals, advocates, and citizens, we must rally behind this call for action. Let's work together to ensure that by next winter, the choice between a tent and a safe, warm home isn't a choice anyone in Canada has to make. #HousingCrisis #HumanRights #CanadaHousing #SocialChange

Solicitor (Non Practising) Supports Tech Property Transport infrastructure (“TPTi”) Social Entrepreneurs ⭕️ Trustee & Honorary Treasurer Gresham Benevolent Fund E : treasurer@greshambenevolentfund.org M: 077659 77318
This is good to see. But what sort of incentives could the government put in place to encourage social housing preneurs … which could be joint property development arms set up by Shelter in consultation with Crisis with Action for Children with Centrepoint etc all of whom are Premier League Third Sector Charities with large fixed asset bases and incomes …. to enable them to connect with and support financially grassroots developers like Lewis & Dan from Allia; George from Go Modular and Craig from Agile as well as regenerators and Retrofitters like Anthony from Gyr … through Local Authority Trading Companies (“ LACTC”) set up by local authorities also with surplus land and property banks … like Herts County Council which owns in its own name £2 billion worth of property comprising 1950 properties….. of which 350 ( !) are surplus to operational requirements? Well you could ask Kim McGuinness North East Mayor for starters but I would suggest that … Social Entreprises joint ventures be offered the same levelling up incentives as are offered to businesses that are based in UK 45 wide free trade zones - I’ll share the list in a mo. PS do you think the Chancellor is gritting her teeth in this picture when Shelter approached her with their begging bowl? Remember outgoing Labour Treasury Minister Liam “ The Byrne of Shame” in May 2010 ( born in Warrington so basically a decent chap) ‘s note to his successor which backfired big time ( and is why I reckon Labour is so scathing about the alleged Tory £22 billion black hole which they haven’t really argued against - “ Revenge is a dish best taken cold” ):- “ Dear Chief Secretary . I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards and good luck Liam!” Somehow I don’t think Rachel Reeves is planning to be reduced to this at the end of her term of office. We may not be heading for an Austerity Budget … it’s just that “ Money’s too tight to mention!” and Third Sectors are going to have to be much more innovative on funding social as opposed to affordable schemes imv
Great to talk to Chancellor Rachel Reeves at #LabourPartyConference about the horrific conditions homeless children living in temporary accommodation are facing, and why the government needs to invest in the 90,000 social homes a year we need to end the housing emergency. #BuildSocialHousing IKEA

📰“The sector needs some tangible support from the government to increase the choice and supply of older people’s housing. The delivery of a range of affordable, later living options must be a priority for future governments to ensure older people have access to beautiful homes within their community where they can age-in-place” An inspiring piece by Jenny Buțerchi, Partner at PRP, in the Evening Standard explores the challenges older adults face in today's housing market. 🔗 https://bit.ly/3yoOJDt #PRPLaterLiving #housingcrisis #seniorliving #ukhousing

More than 139,000 children in England will wake up on Christmas Day without a home. It is the highest number on record!- yet another scary reality because of the broken PRS ! To prevent this impending crisis, it is crucial to address the root causes ; Reducing the tax burden on landlords, simplifying regulations, and fostering a more balanced public perception of landlords can help stabilize the rental market. By making the rental business more viable and attractive, we can ensure a steady supply of rental properties, which is essential for maintaining affordable housing options for tenants. Immediate action is needed to avert a potential tsunami of evictions and ensure a stable housing market for all. https://lnkd.in/eMbfTjre
