Registration is still open through June 14 for this year's Coastal Promise Humanitarian Simulation to be held July 12-14 in Swanton, MD, USA sponsored by the #ForageCenter. The program is designed for students, especially those in the peacebuilding field, to experience the work of humanitarian professionals. It's a 3-day full immersion simulation where students play the role of aid workers on a mission in a fictional conflict/natural disaster to assess needs, deal with community conflict and disaster, engage with IDPs and civil society, and apply peacebuilding skills to complete the work. It is designed for graduate students (master's, post grad certificate, PhD, etc.). Currently students are registered from peacebuilding and conflict resolution programs at the American University, University of North Carolina/Greensboro, University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee, University of Massachusetts/Boston, University of San Diego (Kroc School), and George Mason U. (Carter School). Joining this group provides your students not only a chance to learn about the intersection of peacebuilding and humanitarianism, but also to network with other graduate students. The fee is $600. The Forage Center will provide lodging (though students bring sleeping bags) and meals. Students who are in financial need can apply for a $200 reduction in the registration fee. The need for humanitarian response is greater than it has ever been, as such providing opportunities for students to explore humanitarian careers is critical. Please let me know if you have questions. And please share with your colleagues and students. #humanitarianeducation #peacebuilding #humanitarianism

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the harm inflicted on Indigenous Peoples by the Canadian residential school system. In honour of this day, we encourage everyone in our community to take time to learn more about the impact that residential schools, and colonization, continue to have on Indigenous communities. At Renison, we are actively engaging in Reconciliation in a few ways: 1. Our Reconciliation and Re-storying Steering Committee is examining the ways in which our institution has supported colonialism, and how to tell the story of Renison including the truth of that impact while carving a positive path forward. 2. We have added funding for Indigenous students at Renison to address some of the financial barriers often preventing Indigenous students from accessing postsecondary education. 3. The Renison School of Social Work has added a land/water-based course that will take students on a 10-day canoe paddle to explore Indigenous and decolonizing theoretical knowledge, skills and practices guided by the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace and the original peace treaty Deyohahage: Gihę’ gowahneh - Two Row Wampum. 4. Our upcoming strategic plan will be undertaken using a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion and reconciliation. We continue to look for ways to engage in Reconciliation at Renison, and encourage our whole community to participate. #NDTR2023

Truth and Reconciliation Day is dedicated to honoring the resilience of Indigenous people – First Nation, Métis, and Inuit – while understanding the enduring impact of residential schools. Doing our part to educate ourselves and our employees, we recently hosted a seminar on the history of residential schools. We were honoured to hear from Aldeen Mason as she shared her own experience with Canada’s residential schools, and we thank Kear Porttris of Porttris Group for leading and facilitating this seminar - miigwech Truth and Reconciliation Day provides a valuable opportunity for Canadians to come together, reflect, and remember the painful history that has shaped our nation. Let us unite in our commitment to create a more inclusive and compassionate society, where listening, learning, and supporting truth and reconciliation are paramount. If you're unable to attend an event in-person, the University of Manitoba’s National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website has free educational content, online seminars, as well the National Student Memorial Registry. Take some time to delve through the records, read about the survivors, and learn about this part of our history: https://nctr.ca/ Please note that all our offices will be closed on October 2nd to observe this statutory holiday. We will use this day to reflect on how we can support local initiatives and contribute to positive change. #TruthAndReconciliation #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #Canada #HealingTogether . . . #AMEGroup #BuildingLegacy #Connection #Dedication #Trust #MechanicalEngineering #Engineering #SustainableDesign

Might be abit late, here's an event recap✨ I'm glad to have been part of the team involved in this year's AU ECOSOCC Consultations on the theme of Education. The consultations were divided into four sessions held on April 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Each session had its own agenda: ✔️1st session: A conceptual framework proposed for education fit for Africa in the 21st century, the role of ECOSOCC in the AU theme of the year, and an overview of the key themes of the AU theme. ✔️2nd session: Education for health and wellbeing, education for peace and the African Peace and Security Architecture, climate education, and empowering women and girls through quality education. ✔️3rd session: Group inputs for the AU TOTY 24: CESA and the education model for the 21st century Africa, education for health and wellbeing, education for peace and the African Peace and Security Architecture, and climate education ✔️4th session: Review of the group presentations and adopt key recommendations to complete the first draft of the policy document for submission to the AU and it's various organs and departments. I was part of the third group on Education for peace and African Peace and Security Architecture(APSA) because I believe in educational initiatives and programs aimed at promoting peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and the development of peaceful societies. It involves teaching individuals the values, knowledge, and skills necessary to understand, prevent, and resolve conflicts peacefully. It was great to be a part of the program and participate in the implementation of policies that could work to push forward the agenda. #AU #AfricanUnionECOSOCC #Education

"Truth and Reconciliation in Canada: A Historic Endeavor" When we discuss truth and reconciliation in Canada, we frequently bring up the Indian Residential School (IRS) system. There are other colonial educational systems that we also need to acknowledge, take into consideration, and keep in mind, even though learning about residential schools and their aftereffects is a crucial aspect of truth
