Did you catch us at the state fair? Two weeks ago, Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota set up a stand in the Department of Commerce’s booth alongside Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. The day was full of wonderful conversations about the important work Habitat offices are doing across the state to create lasting affordable housing access. We were especially excited to discuss how we’re building and repairing homes to meet near-term climate challenges using solar panels, air source heat pumps, fortified roofing, and other measures. Thank you to the Minnesota Department of Commerce for their partnership and letting us stop by the fair! #mnstatefair #Habitatforhumanity #sustainability #affordablehousing #minnesota #ecofriendly

PLACE Initiative is a 501(c)3 collaborative of experts in urban planning, sustainable development, climate adaptation, scenario planning, housing, and social justice, focused on the role that place plays in climate change and equity. We are building upon years of collaboration, ideation, and action from a diverse cross section of place-focused professionals. Electric cars and renewable energy alone will not be sufficient to meet our 2050 climate goals, and we believe that urbanism is the missing link. Neither can our climate goals be achieved when much of our society is held down by racial and social injustice. We are crafting resources that communicate the connections between place, climate, and equity. Our goal is to clarify these complex topics and recommend strategies and policy priorities to influence policy and advocacy. 🏛️ Follow us for more urban solutions and get involved by visiting placeinitiative.org.

Wait til they find out there’s three of me…. I joined the Illinois Green Alliance a few years ago as I started to recognize the power in this incredible network of professionals and after meeting Katie Kaluzny and Brian Imus. Alone, it’s tough to change markets and industries, but the collaboration and sharing that happens at IGA is like no organization I’ve ever been part of. If you are a sustainably minded professional, engineer, HVAC contractor, architect or just a Realtor/Consultant like me, IGA supports your professional development with leading edge programs. IGA’s network of memebers will serve as constant inspiration that everyday people call make extraordinary change happen. Membership has given me an opportunity to center a conversation about residential electrification that many want to push aside. The power of together gets us a seat at the public policy table. #bealsproperties #chicagorealestate #chicagorealtor #chicagohome #justlisted #homesearch #chicagorealestateagent #chicagorealestateinvestors #chicagorealestatebrokers #chicagolife #chicagodeveloper #chicagobuilder #chicagobuilders #newconstructionchicago #chicagocontractor #heatpump #solarenergy #electrification #nogas #greenbuild #heatpumps #deepenergyretrofit #decarbonization #hybrid #insulation #airsealing #allelectric #renewableenergy #buildingscience #induction #downsizing Chicago Association of REALTORS® National Association of REALTORS®
April Volunteer Highlight - Wayne Beals, GREEN! Describing Wayne as a dedicated volunteer is an understatement. It often feels as though Wayne is in multiple places at once—he volunteers with our Programs Committee, hosts electric building tours, advocates for green policy at the Chicago City Council, meets with city council members, and much more. Yet, what's even more impressive than his involvement is the knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm he brings to every discussion about green buildings. Thank you for all that you do, Wayne!

Have you ever taken a risk as an organization? Created a strategy, developed a plan, got buy-in and support, and then hoped it worked? That's what we are doing. We are pivoting away from an annual Gala and instead hosting an event this fall we are calling ReGreen Minnesota. We are doing this for a reason: to welcome anyone who wants to take conservation action and make a tangible impact on Minnesota's outdoors. * Instead of tickets priced at over $100 a piece, we are selling them for $40 a person. * Instead of a fancy, seated affair, we are throwing a casual bash where you don't need to buy a new cocktail dress (unless you want to!). * Instead of exclusive, we want to be inclusive. * We'll continue to be informative! From clean water to pollinators, continuous living cover to tree canopies, volunteer events to goats: we'll share what Great River Greening is doing to make an immediate and positive impact on Minnesota's land, for the benefit of people, plants, wildlife, soil and water. Join us and let's ReGreen Minnesota together. #regreen

Thanks to our 2024 Earthshot Prize nomination by Impact Entrepreneur, Home Outside has been learning about the remarkable organizations, funding opportunities, and collaborative relationships that expand our capabilities to help with climate resilience. For instance, Impact Entrepreneur’s recent session “Pioneering Change: Catalyzing Climate Solutions,” presented by Sarah Kearney, explored break-throughs in carbon capture and gave us insights into the details of impact investing in the climate sector. A recent Earthshot newsletter introduced us to Restor.eco – the open-data platform that is helping restore biodiversity around the entire world. In a captivating video, Restor.eco founder Thomas Crowther lets us see and hear a biodiverse forest in Southern Europe and talks about his journey that resulted (after some bumpy steps along the way) in this magnificent platform that uses mapping, AI, and machine learning to let individuals and organizations learn about their land, including specific information about plant, amphibian, and mammal species, carbon sequestration, water, environment, and land cover over time. It’s thrilling to find everything you could hope to know about your own property–big or small–in one place. Hopefully, with enough resources and support, Home Outside will be able to expand our collections of native plants and keystone species to include every eco-region in the world, along with the information needed to access and install the plants, so that every homeowner is able to use their own property to restore biodiversity through their choices of plantings and best maintenance practices–for pollination, water retention, energy savings, and climate resilience, to help our warming planet. #homeoutside #restor #EarthShotPrize #ClimateResilience #impactentrepreneur

Within cities, you often find multiple types of green space. In the shared graphic, see the difference between an urban natural area and a landscaped park. While landscaped parks have recreational and aesthetic benefits, urban natural areas typically offer greater climate adaptive benefits due to size, biodiversity, and the ability to absorb water. In our recently published #ClimateReport co-authored with Central Park Conservancy and Yale School of the Environment we outline how urban natural areas differ from other green spaces and why those differences matter when it comes to climate solutions.
