Tonight's second National Basketball Association (NBA) playoff game is between the western conference 1-seed Oklahoma City Thunder and the 8-seed New Orleans Pelicans. Let's take a look at these teams for our partnership head-to-head matchup series. For this analysis, we are comparing very large partners for each team in different businesses with different activation types. For the Thunder, we're looking at their jersey patch partner Love's Travel Stops and for the Pelicans their arena naming rights partner Smoothie King (SKFI). Even though these partners are in different businesses, they are both high transaction volume businesses with good penetration in each team's local market. So, this could make for an interesting comparison to get a feel for how arena naming and jersey patch partnerships stack up. We need to take this with a big grain of salt, but the Pelicans easily ran away with this one. 19.25% of Pelicans fans visited Smoothie King during this season, compared to 3.73% of Thunder fans visiting Love's. This is an interesting starting point for this analysis. To continue, we'd want to see how OKC and New Orleans residents shop with these brands and how fan spending has trended over time. It would also be interesting to carry this comparison further across multiple jersey patch and arena naming sponsors. Capital One, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Coca-Cola are dominating the NCAA sponsorship game according to MarketCast's latest study of men's college hoop's fans. This annual survey, in partnership with Sports Business Journal, asked NCAA men's basketball fans to correctly identify official league sponsors. Capital One stole the spotlight this year, boasting the highest-ever recognition at 60%, a record for these NCAA studies by MarketCast/SBJ. Not to be outdone, The Home Depot Depot surged from 27% to an impressive 44% recognition from 2021 to 2023.
