Everyone at ABC is thrilled with the response to our 2024 American Bird Conservancy Conservation and Justice Fellowships! We want to ensure that everyone has time to apply, and with that in mind, we've extended the application deadline to Friday, April 5. To help you with your application process, we've put together answers to some Frequently Asked Questions: 1. These fellowships are not staff positions because the work is project-based, under 10 hours a week, and flexible based on project needs. Fellows are paid as contractors, and applicants do not need to be located in the United States but must be eligible to work in the country where they currently live. A few projects require fellows to be located in a specific area to work directly and in person with people in those places. Some projects will include limited travel, and ABC will cover travel costs in addition to the stipends. 2. If you are interested in multiple projects, please rank up to three fellowship projects in order of preference. Project hosts will be sorting candidates based on that ranking. 3. Take your time with your application - ensure it is complete before submitting it! Note: We mention a survey in addition to the screening questions; because the survey is anonymous, we will send it to all applicants once we pass the deadline. We use the same platform for hiring the fellows that we use for full-time positions and internships. Some of you had questions about uploading letters of recommendation or personal statements. You should be able to upload multiple files. We realize these are not the standard cover letters. While we strongly prefer applications through the platform, email us if you have problems. 4. We trust you to submit your letter of recommendation as an attachment to your application - we do not need referents to write directly to us as they might for a college application. Letters can be informal and need to be from someone who knows you, your work, and your aspirations well and can write in detail about all of that (a professor, colleague, supervisor, best friend, family member, mentor, etc.). Letters must include contact information so we can contact that person directly if you are selected as a finalist. 5. If you have questions not addressed here, please get in touch with Naamal De Silva, ABC's Vice President for Together for Birds, at ndesilva@abcbirds.org with "2024 Conservation and Justice Fellowships" in the subject line. Good luck! 📷"Murmurations” by Neha Misra, 2022. #ConservationAndJusticeFellowship #ConservationAndJustice

NOAA provides a search engine to look up listings of species that are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Give it try and let me know what you learn that you didn't know yesterday. My research focuses on these two species. Humpback whales in the North Atlantic are no longer listed. That means the population (or "stock") has recovered to numbers that mean they are surviving long enough to keep the population growing! Killer whales in the Gulf of Mexico and waters around Puerto Rico are not listed. These groups do not have enough research that has been done to understand how many there are in this area. Keep an eye out for opportunities join me as part of my research team as a university internship or a citizen scientist and support protecting whales, dolphins, and the flora and fauna within their ecological niches in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
