Each edition of the Mystery Ahead newsletter has 3 parts: an introductory essay with my latest news, an excerpt of my work in progress, and a review of a mystery that I loved and think my readers will, too. (all reusable content, too) This formula, plus a fixed schedule, helps me stay consistent (7 years!) while my readers always know what they're going to get, leading to a 50% open rate. It was a delicious morning in my favorite chair, with tea in my favorite mug, a new manuscript in my lap, and Earth, Wind, and Fire on the record player. I’m starting a developmental edit for this author, which means I’m looking primarily at the effectiveness of the book’s overall structure and content for their intended reader. Specifically, I’m asking questions like: 1. Is the book in the best order and arrangement to get your ideas across clearly? 2. What’s special and working well about your book, and how can I help you bring more of that forward? 3. Are there holes in your argument or story? Sections of less energy where your reader is likely to get confused or bored and put down the book?
