99% OF INTERVIEWERS AND HIRING MANAGERS... Did not get interviewer training and are repeating the same outdated models to interviewing. I've spent countless hours training interviewers on the best practices of interviewing, and I still see this same repeated questions over and over again. SAVE & SHARE THIS POST! Here are some simple, quick changes you can make, by asking more meaningful questions that reveal a candidate’s true potential fit to role and company. 1. “Tell me about yourself.” ASK INSTEAD: “Tell me about your professional experience most relevant to the role.” WHY: This refines the focus to relevant experience, allowing candidates to share the most pertinent information for the role they’re applying for. 2. “What’s your greatest weakness?” ASK INSTEAD: “What professional skill are you actively trying to improve?” WHY: This shifts the conversation to self-awareness and continuous growth, encouraging candidates to discuss their proactive efforts to improve. 3. “Why do you want to work here?” ASK INSTEAD: “What aspects of our company's mission or recent work resonate with you?” WHY: This invites a more thoughtful response and reveals how aligned the candidate is with the company’s values and direction. 4. “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” ASK INSTEAD: “How do you see this role contributing to your long-term goals?” WHY: This allows candidates to express how the role fits into their personal and professional development plans. 5. “Why do you think we should hire you?” ASK INSTEAD: “How do you see your skills and experience contributing to our current projects and goals?” WHY: This focuses on how the candidate’s strengths will directly impact the company's initiatives and success. 6. “Do you have any questions for us?” ASK INSTEAD: “What additional information would help you better understand this role or our company?” WHY: This shows a commitment to transparency and helps ensure that both parties have a clear understanding of expectations. These simple shifts in phrasing can lead to deeper, more productive conversations and help hiring managers truly gauge a candidate’s fit and potential. Let’s move beyond the old, surface-level questions and aim for meaningful dialogue that spark genuine conversation and provide valuable insights. Can you suggest a list of questions that you love which have been insightful? -- I'm Nina Devouge I've spent 50,000+ hours reviewing resumes, 36,000+ hours interviewing candidates and I have helped companies build their hiring strategy and trained interviewers and hiring managers. 2moThis is truly commendable and impressive HackerOne. I'm curious to know if you also provide personalized feedback to interviewees after the interview process. I believe feedback should be a two-way street, benefiting both parties in their growth and development.
