What have been your successful strategies to ensure employee engagement? ✏️ First and foremost is establishing a genuine connection with each and every employee. Insist your supervisors meet one-on-one with each employee and find out their career interests and what they enjoy most about their job. Have career discussions at least once a year. Match new employees with a mentor. Promote from within. Provide flexibility with hours and try to accommodate work/life balance as much as possible. Part-time professional opportunities and job sharing are great strategies to keep working parents engaged with your company. Personally, I worked part-time as a HR Director for 7 years when my children were young and a few others on my team were also part-time professionals. It can work if you are flexible. I was later promoted to a VP role. I stayed working at that particular company 16 years until the company was sold. Recognize employees whenever possible in as many ways as possible. Simple ideas such as “Employee of the Month” and celebrating birthdays and work anniversaries can go a long way but even more effective is genuinely thanking people on the team who are doing a great job. Pay fairly and as close to market as possible and provide a solid benefits package. And, one last piece of advice, don’t pay new people coming in to entry level jobs more than the existing people on the team. If hiring rates have gone up to keep up with market, adjust others already on the team.

Executive assistant to employee experience and engagement? Its actually a pretty natural pipeline! Seasoned EAs already know that we are really the ones that know everything that's going on in the company. We are the ones people come to when they aren't happy but don't feel comfortable for whatever reason sharing that with a manager or leadership. We get the real unfiltered truth because our colleagues know we are information vaults. But this is our secret sauce for being naturals at championing for better employee experience and engagement. I am by nature a problem solver - when I hear a common theme from amongst my coworkers, I want to put a solution in place asap. My last big initiative was a practice-wide employee recognition software that I've been advocating for for years. Its a huge hit and so fun to see the constant peer-to-peer kudos and shoutouts coming through to recognize all the hard work being done. Being an EA is an incredible career-I've been doing it my entire adult life. But if you ever want to move to a different area and try something new, there are so many perfectly adjacent roles that fit our experience, and how I was able to get a promotion to Sr. Operations Specialist a few years ago. (And start an incredibly successful travel agent side business, but that's another story.) What are some other roles you feel a career EA would excel in? What's been your path? As an employee engagement consultant, we recently had the privilege of conducting an in-depth Employee Engagement study for a client in Cape Town and was honored to spend some time with them on site. Despite spending an entire day in Cape Town, I never got a full view of Table Mountain as it remained covered in a tablecloth of clouds. This became a poignant metaphor for our mission: uncovering hidden truths beneath organizational complexities.
