Yes, those 3 words can even feel like a platitude, or a trigger when we are not feeling our best. I can't help but wonder how your team member responded to your response. Team member: are you ok? could have been her noticing you are stressed out or not yourself. It may or may not have taken alot of courage for her to ask. The response you posted could also be taken in several ways. ( as a vet med wellness coach, I help shine the light on different POVs to bring alignment to teams) 1) you trust her and confide your honest feelings but is she able to receive it? 2) 3rd party info: your frustration could be relayed back to her team as negativity or even complaining as the things you are venting may or may not have to do with her team. 3) What tools are missing from your team members toolbox? IE - self awareness (what am I noticing, how is that affecting how I am doing my work), perception checking (what is her intent behind asking if you are ok, what is your intent in your reply) 4) Who can you goto to get DVM support? (team member won't have the power) What resources for learning are available via people ops, HR, etc. ?
An employee asked if I was ok today. Me… the Hospital Manager… she asked if I was ok. She told me that the team noticed something wasn’t quite right because I showed up at a team huddle and seemed quite frustrated. How do I respond? What should I say? Do I keep it professional or answer honestly. I decided to answer honestly. I told her I have some personal things, and I’m sorry that side came out. Look, I’m not a dictator Manager. I don’t micromanage. If you want to be on your phone, fine, but our sole priority is patient care. When I’m met with indifference when I’m trying to make our work environment better. When employees don’t take me seriously when I’m being serious and act as if “Alana will be ok with it.” When the responsibilities are listed but nobody bothers because “Alana will do it.” When it is apparent that the overall team doesn’t get the overall mission, which is patient and client priority. When I don’t get doctor support for trying to grow the practice. I get frustrated. I told her this, and I told her she could share it with the team if she wants. Should I have? I have no idea. But I did. Vulnerability at its finest. “Are you ok?” And “Is everything ok”…. 3 very strong words. #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #hospitalmanager #vettech #frustration #areyouok

A Meditation for Collection - Save this for after a difficult interaction in practice/receiving verbal abuse Working in veterinary can be an emotional rollercoaster, and sometimes we just need a few moments to be able to pause, breathe, and collect ourselves… In recent weeks following media coverage of the CMA review of the vet sector, we have heard from our colleagues experiencing - and experienced ourselves - an increase in challenging interactions with clients, although sadly being on the end of verbal abuse is nothing new for many of us who work in practice. We are trained very highly in many skills as veterinary professionals, but regulating our own nervous system following being on the receiving end of a verbal attack or misdirected complaint isn’t something we are formally taught while learning how to be vets, nurses, receptionists and managers. Feelings of anxiety, frustration, intimidation, etc, can stay present in our minds and bodies long after the incident is over, and if we don’t take mindful steps to breathe and allow ourselves to feel safe again, it can spill over into the rest of our day and even life outside of work. To help for those moments, Chloe has recorded a short guided audio meditation on our platform, the VetYogi Collective. It’s just 5 mins long, so is very much do-able even on the busiest days in practice ✨ We wanted to ensure everyone who needed it could access this one, so all you have to do is head to www.collective.vetyogi.com, scroll down and hit play! While we can’t promise it’ll make everything ok, we can offer you a calm and safe space to be human 🫶🏻 We’d love to hear if it helps you in the comments, along with any suggestions for content you would love to see! #vetyogi #vetyogi_vy #vetyogicollective #meditation #calm #collection #nervoussystemregulation #safespace #yogaforvets #yogaforvetnurses #breathe #veterinary #wellbeing #selfcare #challengingtimes #itsokaynottobeokay #stethoscopedownyogaup

I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter & I'm still hoping my letter will arrive and there has been some problem with the post 📬 ...but I don't think the scenario Mr Hope is suffering below is magical, I think it's something else 🤔 😡 In veterinary medicine, as in human medicine (and probably many other jobs), we have given so many hours for free in the last decades, that the system is build on it, relies on it. A wrong management takes them for granted, no one has quantified the cost of these hours, shall we? Management, bottom to top, many times hasn't acknowledged this extra-work, and the worst thing is that the WE have assumed that this is normal...we even feel grateful when time is given within the shift for paperwork! That is not normal, the system can't depend on this and we need to raise this concern in case they haven't realised (let's be hopeful). This situation is not fair and it's not healthy. It's not fair that the hospital/s keep working reasonably well, in part, because many employees do extra-hours. Yes, oh yes, the targets are met in the meeting room upstairs and in the videocall, between management layer 1 and management layer 100, there is laughter and pride, but at what cost? and are they aware about all of this? There is many times a mental healthy cost + it's just unfair from an economic point of view as well! 🧙♀️ It's time to counter-spell 🧙♀️ it's time to be out of the box and leave inside the box 📦 the misuse of: - 'It's the nature of our job' - 'It's professional courtesy' - 'It's the same everywhere' - 'It's the same in human medicine' - They are jumping from the cliff...shall we 🐑 ? NO. There isn't an easy solution, but only if we acknowledge the problem and we think together and we challenge it, we will get better. I would encourage all of you to reflect... ...once you get home 😊 🤔 💪 What do you think may help? #beoutofthebox #diaryofhope
