🌟 “When we choose to wonder about people we don’t know, when we imagine their lives and listen for their stories, we begin to expand the circle of those we see as part of us.”🌟 — Valarie Kaur One way to get people talking is to offer a quote for reflection. In conversation with a DEIB Family Partnership Group this week I shared quotes from a range of authors and thinkers and activists. This quote, from Civil Rights Leader, Lawyer and Documentary Filmmaker, Valerie Kaur, resonated with many people in the group. 🗣️🗣️🗣️ It got us talking. What was shared? 💠 Experiences from childhood when we felt cut off or misunderstood 💠Moments in parenting when we made choices for our children to expand their circle 💠Events that we’ve navigated where we felt that our own stories were not heard There was a collective desire to open up, and space was created to get to know each other a little better by listening to the details of each other’s lives. This is how community is built. This is how we nurture Belonging. ➡️ How can you get curious about the lives of the people you engage with? ➡️ What can you do to expand your circle? #DEIB #belonging #inclusion #community #SEL #studentvoice #commuinty #elementaryschool #socialemotionallearning #schoolcommunity #studentcentered #eyesopeneducation

Using All Resources: Critical to Inclusivity Addressing the specific needs of individuals can be challenging due to gaps in understanding, particularly by key providers. I encourage using all available information resources to make proactive decisions on how to include diverse needs. Excited to share insights at the American Camp Association - New England on proactively addressing the diverse behavioral needs of campers in camp programming. Emily Golinsky MS and I will discuss incorporating school year special education and accommodation planning into this process, particularly as it relates to behavioral considerations. #Inclusivity #Diversity #Education #CampProgramming #SpecialNeeds #Inclusion #ProactiveDecisions #BehavioralNeeds

Following on from my post yesterday about the awful othering of children with complex needs at a Scottish primary school, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the term “othering”. The crux of the matter is that children do not “other” by nature - rather they learn to, based on the attitudes and behaviour of the adults they trust. Isn’t that a sad thought? So. It’s up to us, the adults in the room. And it’s a long way from exclusion (No, you can’t join us) to segregation (You can be here but stay over there) to inclusion (Yes, you can join us) to belonging (We are all the same). How do we do the work now, for future generations? Please share. #inclusion #othering #belonging #education #growth #DEI #parenting #teaching

Seasoned cross-functional collaborator with a deep background in work accommodations and accessibility towards promoting disability inclusion as both a competitive advantage and corporate sustainability vehicle.
This is one of the better articles I've read that discusses why identity-first language for disability is every bit as valid, if not more so, than person-first language. I'll admit I was trained in the person-first model during my graduate rehabilitation counseling program and was convinced it was absolutely the right way until not all that long ago. But I've learned with an identity-first lens comes cultural pride, that being "disabled" or "autistic" is how folks from those communities choose to self-identify while not having people outside those communities decide that for them. That's why I prefer to be referenced as "blind guy/dude" instead of "person with blindness" (not to mention the person-first option in this case is an impractical mouth-full). Over in my work for Single Parent Rights, we are developing a single parent policy for schools with ideas from our members. It's still a work in progress so I'd love to get more feedback from: 👉Single parents 👉People working in schools 👉Those working in Diversity and Inclusion There are ideas around: ✅Language and tone: free from judgement ✅Care and clubs: single parent priority access ✅School uniforms: pre loved schemes, borrow boxes and limited branded items ✅Parent conferences: separate for both parents where needed ✅Fees: payment brackets ✅Diversity and Inclusion: training for teachers ✅Special days: being as inclusive as possible ✅Building community: establishing single parent groups within the school These - and many others - are fleshed out in the policy document. 👇 You can download it from the Single Parent Rights website here (scroll down to the 'become a single parent inclusive school' button). 👇 🔗https://lnkd.in/etFib7BP
