The initiative was developed in recognition of the fact that financial barriers frequently exist that prevent individuals and groups from putting their innovative ideas into practice. At the recently concluded MSME conference, at one of the panel sessions, a guest speaker spoke about the availability of sufficient funds from the Government to the MSME sector, and also stated that what constitute the bottleneck is lack of required capacity by the business owners to access the funds available... Hmm 🤔, some of the conference attendees did not agree with this, while others felt it was well said. The reality is that when you look at the little percentage of MSMEs that are credit worthy or investment ready, then you can determine what is true..... Again, my opinion is 'teach people how to fish 🐠 and don't just give them the fish'. By facilitating a session on business and financial literacy to a group of female owners of small business ventures in Lagos few months ago, then it's easier to buttress the saying above👆 After the women had all gone through vocational skills training, they were enrolled to participate in a program to equip them with essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage their finances and grow their businesses. The EmpowerHer Initiative was sponsored by Arise Foundation USA, implemented by Women's Board and facilitated by ScientiaPartners Hub. Kudo 👍for the great initiative! The participants were all guided through the process of writing their business plans and on completion of the program, they got grants for their businesses. Yesterday, Laia Neira Quintanilla and Rebekah Sharp traveled to Brussels to participate in the 2024 European DFIs - EDFI networking event, hosted by BIO - the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries. The day was spent learning, connecting, and sharing long-anticipated updates on the upcoming launch of JIM 4.0. Informative breakout sessions covered topics like: - Additionality - Impact investment in fragile-country-contexts - Inclusive business We found these discussions super engaging and thought-provoking. The JIM is so grateful for the opportunity to connect with our EDFI community. 🌟 What are the Impact Hub's Impact Assessment Sessions? 🌟 These sessions are a key part of the Impact Hub research and take place before (pre-session) and after (post-session) the 6 month programme. 🚀 The Impact Assessment Sessions are divided into two parts: 1️⃣ Hub participants fill in a questionnaire to share their perspectives, focusing on: 1) benefits of participating in the Impact Hub; 2) reflection on MfN's current support for public engagement using the EDGE tool. 2️⃣ Interviews to explore Hub participants' perspectives on the impact of their work, the role of public engagement in research, and how the Impact Hub supports them with funding, time management strategies, participatory and innovative methods, professional development, mentoring and networking. 💬 The results of these sessions will provide valuable insights into the role of the Hub in promoting: 1) PE as a pathway for research impact; 2) the integration of PE into research; 3) participatory, co-creative and innovative practices between science and society. 🌱 We're looking forward to continuing to develop a programme that supports MfN researchers and staff in developing impactful public engagement projects.
