Incredible first day at BioFuture right down the block from me in NYC! In particular, one segment of the final session I attended highlighted the biggest bottlenecks biotech companies face in early development. The speakers cited the importance of IP, the conundrum that innovation is happening but the bar for innovative products to get funding is higher than ever, the average cost of filing a BLA alone being $50M, ongoing hurdles in patient enrollment, etc. But what truly captivated me was the conversation around the impact of an organization’s Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) approach. One speaker pointed out that nearly a third of biotech companies fail due to a weak CMC strategy. This challenge resonates even more given the potential implications of the BioSecure Act on CMC development. There’s so much to unpack about the Act’s reach, but I think Greg Simon captured it best today in an earlier panel. To paraphrase: "Operating out of a response to a perceived threat is a good way to lose.
