Not far from the office there is a small cafe where you can take coffee to go. The selection of coffee types is standard there and it is possible to buy some buns and chocolate as well. What I really like in this café is the barista’s customer focus and his wish to remember taste details of each of his client. Many times I have seen when he asked the visitor: “Are you going to order as usual?”, “Do you need the same amount of sugar as previously or is it better to add honey instead?” I come to this cafe in the morning before entering the office. Usually barista sees me walking towards and when I enter the front door, my coffee is already being cooked. “I made your orange coffee for you the way you like it: a bit warmer than standard.” – he says. A minute and I am the owner of an excellent quality morning drink, prepared the way I like it. By the way, “orange coffee” is made using orange juice whipped with a shot of espresso in a cappuccino maker. This is a simple example of focusing on the customer`s wish on which small businesses are built on. Will I go to other cafes in this area? Yes, to feed my curiosity and to try the quality of the drink in other places. But I’m still a regular customer at this cafe, where quality, convenience and attentiveness to me are collected in the same place. #customerexperience #customerjourney #customerloyalty

After recently coming back from Japan, visiting Specialty Coffee Shops over there really made me want to share my thoughts! As a Head Barista within the Coffee Industry, I would love to see these 3 things in the UK Specialty Coffee scene: - Interactive Menu: This might not be in every coffee shop in Japan, but literally every Specialty Coffee shop I visited had all of their coffee selection laid out in a line, contained in little receptacles for the consumer to smell with an informative mini card. First impressions are always important and I believe this approach helps consumers of all backgrounds find their ideal coffee to drink. - ‘Omakase’ concept coffee bars: Similar to the concept of live cooking, the majority of the Specialty Coffee shops I went to made and served the coffee infront of you. This produces an intimate experience and connection to the process, as well as a visual understanding of how a ‘simple cup of coffee’ is made. - Broad selection of Coffees: From your Brazillian Caturras to Panamanian Geishas, there were so many Coffee shops with at least 12+ types of coffee to choose from. Although logistically, it can be quite difficult to sustain that amount of coffee given the amount of capital needed, I believe it contributed to giving the coffee shops a certain sophistication from the moment you walk in. Overall, I want to believe these 3 things can greatly contribute towards elevating the Specialty Coffee experience within the UK and create more exposure to the general public.
