America - Home of the Free. Were it not for the brave men and women who recognized the value of freedom, and memorialized individual rights and liberties in historic documents, Americans would not have the pleasures of freedom. The founding fathers of this great country understood that freedom is a fundamental and basic right, allowing citizens to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Therefore, to protect freedom, the founders created the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, three significantly important documents, written over two centuries ago, giving American citizens the valued freedoms to be able to live their individual lives, without fear of retribution. The principles of the Constitution are based upon the philosophy of a free society, guaranteeing citizens checks and balances, individual rights, liberty and justice. Without free will, we would not be able to live our lives the way we want, practice our faith the way we want, or express our views openly. Freedom should never be taken for granted, it is a powerful right, allowing us the ability to live according to our own agenda. It is up to each individual to make good choices while forming relevant opinions about current issues, and basing these choices on legitimate, credible and valid sources of information. Just as our forefathers made good decisions to protect freedom, future generations are dependent on the important fact-based decisions that are made by the citizens of today. In my latest essay for the American Institute for Economic Research - AIER I explain why the classical liberal ideal of freedom from coercion and the collectivist ideal of freedom from necessity cannot coexist logically or morally. When the ideal of true freedom from coercion is no longer a shared societal goal, history teaches that unimaginable horrors can be just around the corner.

On this July 4th, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, I find myself reflecting deeply on the state of our democracy and the freedoms we hold dear. As a Black and Latina American, today is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for true equality and justice. Our country was founded on principles of liberty and justice for all, yet we continue to witness the erosion of civil liberties, unwarranted freedom issued to domestic terrorists, and a nation rotting from the loins of our leadership by incessant untruths. The political climate has become increasingly hostile to marginalized communities, and those of color, and it’s imperative that we remain hyper-vigilant and active in protecting our rights. I do not see myself as a political activist. I do, however, know that my mind, voice, and freedom to use both are gifts not to squander.
