Regulation of Halal slaughter/meat production Government body's including New Zealand are involved in halal meat production. Why? Money from exports sales. Economic. Noel Pattison asked a good question over differing Halal standards, being accepted by Muslims so how can the likes of DEFRA (UK) get involved. Muslim consumers like many have very little control except the label information that they then make informed decisions. Muslim certifers and businesses (Muslim and non Muslim) self certify that say they accept one slaughter method whilst others won't. On the ground it's a real hotchpotch. The worst part is for consumers, the law is there to protect them where a food claim is made but there's no definition of what's halal is so producers, certifers can go about giving their version and putting the SAME claim of Halal. The only term in regulation relating to slaughter is religious slaughter which is slaughter without pre-stunning. You could argue halal a term applied to food required by Muslim consumers. Halal is ONE word used but the standards can vary and label or certificate does clarify it either. For example, Poultry production for halal slaughter can come from: 1. Non stun & hand slaughter; 2. Water bath pre stun & hand slaughter; 3. Water bath pre stun & machine slaughter; and 4. Controlled Atmosphere Stunning (Mixture of gases) As someone who regulates food claims and labelling. It's a huge problem for Muslim consumers who are obliged to consume halal and tayyib food. Slaughter is not called halal it's called dhabihah /zabiha. Halal is a requirement i.e. it's lawfully carried out: high welfare; minimising distress to the animal (they can't see each other being slaughtered), slaughter has to be swiftly done, the spine can't be cut because thats going cause high pain. There's more a lot incl rearing, battery farming which doesn't fit into the halal requirement. Halal claims's is a big area not limited to meat. Better labelling, transparency

In New Zealand, Halal meat production is taken so seriously that it comes under the Ministry of Primary Industries. In the UK, Halal is barely mentioned in law. Time to boldly take decisions on a sector that underpins most of the meat industry, just look at the figures objectively (no personal opinion allowed please).

"𝟴𝙩𝙝 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙂𝙇𝙊𝘽𝘼𝙇 𝙃𝘼𝙇𝘼𝙇 𝙁𝙊𝙊𝘿 𝙄𝙉𝘿𝙐𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙔 𝙄𝙉𝙎𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏𝙎 𝙁𝙍𝙊𝙈 𝙋𝘼𝙆𝙄𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉" The conference highlighted the need for standardized Halal certification processes, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms to guarantee the authenticity and quality of Halal products. This is crucial for building consumer trust, preventing fraud, and promoting fair trade practices. Standardization also facilitates international trade and market access, enabling the Halal food industry to grow and expand globally. Moreover, the conference likely emphasized the importance of involving Islamic scholars, scientists, industry experts, and regulators in the development of Halal standards and certification processes to ensure that they align with Islamic principles, scientific knowledge, and industry best practices. By addressing these issues, the conference aimed to contribute to the development of a more robust, reliable, and sustainable Halal food ecosystem that benefits consumers, businesses, and communities worldwide. #halalfoods #8internationalconference #halalfoodindustry #bzumultan #JinnahAuditorium
