'Muslim #branding' and #halal products
A week after a deputy tourism minister in #Malaysia announced the possibility of positioning #Langkawi as a Muslim destination (something I think is absolutely brilliant but extremely challenging because Thailand, the UK, France and Singapore are popular Muslim destinations) his boss came out and said it wasn't happening.
But it got me thinking about all the money invested in the halal industry and I came up with some random stats that I thought I'd share with you.
Malaysia has 95,398 (2021) products that are halal certified and fun fact, 68,686 of them are non bumiputera owned products.
Thailand has more than 160,000 halal certified products and one assumes the vast majority of them are non bumiputera owned.
Talking of positioning, Thailand aims to be a regional halal hub in 4 years (2028). I don't know if you can have 2 regional halal hubs in the same region but according to the article below, Malaysia is the worlds leading halal industry hub.
However that article says Malaysia exports about US$8 billion of halal products which is half what MITI says so I'm not sure how that will evolve.
Where is Thailand sending its halal products? Well Indonesia, Iraq, the UAE, Mozambique and Malaysia, yes Malaysia account for 75% of total halal food exports.
Despite having almost twice as many halal products which make up 20% of Thailands total food exports, Thailand's halal product exports are valued at around US$6 billion only half of Malaysia's halal product exports valued at US$13 billion according to MITI.
