3 of 478,367 reasons why Truck Drivers quit in less than 6 months I was having a conversation with a newly hired Truck Driver who started his career doing OTR. He was already looking for another job after a couple months in trucking. He shared his situation with me at his current job and I felt his pain. His first day on the job was: The boss said, here's the key for the truck. It's loaded, here's your paperwork and off you go. He had to figure "everything" out on his own and it was tough. Why is he planning to leave? 1 👉🏿No training 2 👉🏿Lack of support 3 👉🏿The pay is not worth the hassle Here's my take.. I'm not telling anyone how to run their business but if you truly value Truck Drivers, and care about everyone's safety I would suggest to guide them on the right path to create long-term success with the support they need to get the job done effectively, instead of letting them loose to fail miserably and then quit. I hear rumors all the time that Truck Drivers don't want to work.. That can true for some.. However, I can tell you from over a decade experience of professional truck driving and interacting with thousands of other Drivers in the industry It's not the fact that Truck Drivers don't want to do the work, sometimes the people they work with makes their job harder than it actually is. If you’re struggling to recruit Truck Drivers and wondering why things aren’t going as well as they should. Here are some tips, I’ve been a truck driver and I’ve walked in a truck drivers shoes. 1. Pick up the phone. 2. Engage the driver. 3. Ask questions. 4. Know the product (company). 5. “I don’t know” doesn’t work. 6. Be HONEST. 7. Follow-up. 8. Carry through to the finish line, even after a driver is hired check in on the driver. I don’t like being thrown to the wind. 9. Return phone calls promptly. 10. Text messages are impersonal. 11. Don’t promise what can’t be done. 12. Always remember, driver supports everyone else’s paycheck. 14. If a driver shows interest, call the driver before asking for an application, it shows it’s about the driver, not pushing paperwork. I delete any job offers when they text me or ask for an application and haven’t even called, and that happens way more than I care to admit. AND 13. FOCUS on HOMETIME as the selling pitch! #1 thing I hear in orientation is “that’s not what the recruiter told me” and drivers end up fired up! 🔥 Let’s end the disconnect and work together for the common good and be a TEAM, everyone in a trucking company has a vital role to play, let’s focus on that. ❤️❤️❤️ Focus on what the company is, instead of trashing other companies to make it sound like one company is better than everyone else or enveloping the drama into a post or ad interaction. Most drivers already know the problems we face, we are looking for a job where we want to be for awhile, not the same old thing we left the last place because of. For me, the company that stands out to me is the one that does, with action what they mean, not by talking 1,000 word essay conversations that I’d have over coffee with a friend. Anymore, talk doesn’t mean anything to me when it comes to a job. I wanna hear how a company is different, their values, beliefs and morals. What makes them a good company?, what do they pride themselves in? and what will I (the driver) see myself?, in my own eyes? Not “oh you’ll get home time” yet I’m home 2 days a month or I have to argue to go home when it should be scheduled in automatically because the job offer after all was “10 days out 3 days at home” so why am I out for a 13th day?. Instead I actually GET 10/3 hometime because that’s what the agreement was when the Recuriter sold me on the company and the job. ☕️ It’s all about EFFORT! Time and time again, the resounding response has been ... #QualityDrivers! Yet, despite this consensus, there seems to be a hesitance in embracing the groundbreaking potential of the TruckThisJob #JobBoard, powered by the innovative #StarBehaviors #BehavioralAssessment for #TruckDrivers. Are we shackled by fear of departing from the familiar grounds of #StatusQuoCity? Is there a reluctance to stray from the comfort of #TradeShows and #Lovefests organized by the #CashCows? I believe there are bold trailblazers among us, ready to venture beyond the ordinary and embrace revolutionary change. Or perhaps, are the #Owners, #CEOs, and #Presidents disconnected from the challenges faced by their #DriverRecruitingDepartments, unaware of the substantial financial losses incurred right under their noses? It is #NOT the purpose of a #DriverRecruitingDepartment to ... ➤ Employ Recruiters and Provide Jobs for Recruiters ➤ To Have a Large Advertising Budget ➤ To Have Something to Talk About on LinkedIn ➤ To Give Us, as an Employee, a Sense of Worth & Purpose ➤ To Have the Ability to Go to Recruiting / User Conferences and Have a Good Time The Primary and Sole #PURPOSE of a #DriverRecruitingDepartment is to #Recruit and #Hire Professional #Quality, #Qualified #Drivers when the need and opportunity arises. (Hopefully, the #DriverRecruitingDepartment is like the #MaytagRepairman.) The 2nd question of ... When is a #DriverRecruitingDepartment viewed as being successful? That answer is #SIMPLE ... When the #DriverRecruitingDepartment is #NOT needed !! #DriverRecruitingDepts should #NOT be a #factory or #meatgrinder grinding out drivers 10, 15, 20 or more a week !!
