I am reaching out to all of my fellow hiring managers/HR personnel in the technical fields and wanted to get some input based on a question I received from an engineering student this weekend. Please repost if you would like to see some of the results. With many students looking for summer internships now, some companies are posting minimum GPA requirements. Are hiring managers worried about grade boosting from universities just to get the hiring numbers up? And would you consider a student with a lower grade point average who has competed in a sport, participated in a major-related club, or worked a part- or full-time job to pay for college? Do employers look beyond the grade point average, or a specific school? I have my own opinions and am looking to see what others are really looking for in a technical or STEM related intern.

It's hard looking for a new career when all of these companies post jobs as 'Entry Level' then the descriptions are mid-senior level jobs. Since when did internships require 'experience'? Isn't that the point of an internship, to take you in and help you gain practical, hands-on experience? Since when did your education level trump knowledge and expertise in a field? Does having a Master's Degree in Computer Science make that person better or smarter than somebody who has a technical certification or Associates Degree and knows just as much, and in a lot of cases more, than the person who has a Master's? A lot of the these hiring managers and recruiters are out of touch for the position they're hiring for and it's hurting many of us because they don't know the difference between 'Entry Level' and 'experienced'.

Prepare the right application: polish up your resume, cover letter, and interview skills. 3. "Mikael Rahmani, a senior at Boston University, checks all the boxes: extracurricular activities, good grades, internships. But as the clock ticks toward graduation, he’s struggling to find a job—despite applying to about 15 a week... Rahmani had a full-time offer from HP Inc., where he interned last summer, but he turned it down because he didn’t want to relocate to Houston. Now, he and other college seniors interviewed by Bloomberg News are grappling with a sluggish white-collar job market, where companies navigating an uncertain economy and higher interest-rates have pulled back on entry-level hiring. 'I’m seeing a little bit of a disconnect between my internship prospects last year versus my full-time prospects this year,' said Rahmani, who is studying finance and business analytics. The issues for new graduates started to pop up last May as layoffs in technology and finance soured their job prospects. And it’s gotten worse. Layoffs have mounted, and fewer employees have been quitting, leaving less room for new hires. University career-service centers say full-time recruitment is eerily quiet. More interns aren’t getting job offers. And start dates for some new hires have been delayed or even rescinded. It’s bad enough that University of Michigan alumni who graduated into the Great Recession were recently asked to speak to current students. To be sure, the overall labor market has proven resilient in the face of the Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes to quell inflation. The health care sector, for instance, has created more jobs. But growth in better-paying industries such as technology and financial services has been more uneven. Hiring in both sectors was down more than 20% in November compared to a year ago, according to data from LinkedIn, an employment-focused social media platform. 'When employers want to shrink down, the easiest way to do it is to freeze hiring. That doesn’t matter all that much to most employees who already have a job,' said Peter Cappelli, a professor of management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Interacting with final-year engineering students from my alma mater B. M. S. College of Engineering was super refreshing! I was invited by the placements office at BMSCE to interact with more than 200 students on simple things to keep in mind while applying for a job. My interaction involved drafting an impressive resume, various platforms to apply for a job or an internship, punctuality, presentability, and cracking a recruiter's thought process. I also interacted with many students personally after finishing my discussion. Our conversations mostly revolved around building proof of work, technology and obviously 'how to get a job'.
