I spent two years of my life in 🇮🇶 Iraq April 2003- March 2004 and December 2005 -November 2006. In that time I inhaled a lot of Sand and other crud. Think about your sinuses after a dusty day in the field and when you blow your nose, ewwww! Yeah it’s not pretty. Now understand that same junk your body needs to expel is going into your gearbox. Like you your gearbox needs to breath. What it is designed to do is exhale the hot air and bring in cooler air to relieve pressure being built up from the heat it generates as the gears rotate. Standard breathers eventually allow dust, sand, and other particles into the oil. The harsher the environment the quicker your oil is contaminated and the more often you need to change it. When you don’t change the oil the gearbox will ultimately fail and you get shut down.
