We're excited to announce a major innovation! Haley Ward now provides fast, efficient workflows for drainage and upslope basin analysis using high-resolution elevation data. Most sites have public LiDAR coverage, allowing us to quickly deliver hydrographic and topographic insights with much greater detail than standard USGS datasets. Our process is mostly automated and generates: · Watershed/basin boundaries · Flowlines and drainage networks · Outfalls and sub-catchment areas · Upslope landcover analysis · Detailed topographic maps with one-foot contours, shaded relief, and slope gradients With added project costs normally under $1k, it's an affordable solution for enhanced site planning! #haleyward #GIS #workflows #topographicmaps #GISmapping

🌊 Unveiling the Subtle Elevation Differences Along the Susquehanna River 🌍 As part of the #30DayMapChallenge (Day 6: Raster), I’m excited to share this project visualizing the Relative Elevation Models (REMs) of the Susquehanna River. Using REMs, I explored subtle elevation changes between the river and its surrounding floodplain—essential for understanding geomorphology, flood risks, and conservation planning. 📊 What’s in the project? Data: High-resolution lidar DEM sourced from the USGS 3DEP Lidar Explorer. Tools: Visualization created in QGIS, an open-source GIS platform. Methodology: The IDW interpolation method was used to estimate the river's surface height, revealing critical elevation patterns. 🌟 Why REMs Matter: Relative Elevation Models help identify flood-prone areas, track landscape changes over time and support environmental protection efforts. 💡 This project wouldn't have been possible without the inspiring tutorial from Dan Coe Cartography. The methodology was adapted from their approach, while the visualization and analysis were done by me. 📷 Check out the visualization below, and explore more of my work on my portfolio: https://lnkd.in/ewZieTwv Let me know your thoughts or if you'd like to collaborate on similar projects! #DataVisualization #GIS #QGIS #FloodManagement #SusquehannaRiver #Geography #Cartography #REM #elevation #30DayMapChallenge #Elevation #dataviz #MapDesign #MappingScience #Creativity

Stoked to finally see this study in print. We all know that vegetation can help stabilize slopes, but knowing to what degree (and applying this knowledge to large-scale landslide susceptibility assessments) can be ridiculously challenging. We were able to fine-tune a GIS method for converting lidar-derived vegetation to a root strength index (not the most detailed answer, but VERY expedient and scalable). The cool thing? Over 75% of eastern Kentucky landslides triggered by a 2022 storm can be explained, at least in part, by a low root strength index. The really cool thing? This work can be adapted and applied to other landslide-prone regions and, hopefully, prove valuable in narrowing down slopes likely to fail in the future. Catastrophic storms that initiate slides are, apparently, not going away any time soon. Finding ways to efficiently constrain hazard in affected areas is critical, so help us out: give our article a read and, if you have lidar and landslides in your area, try out our method and report back!

LiDAR Point Cloud Surface Bare Earth data offers several significant benefits, especially in fields like cartography, forestry, urban planning, and environmental management. Here are some of the key advantages: ✅ Accurate Topography and Terrain Modeling: Provides precise elevation data essential for designing drainage systems, buildings, infrastructure, and biomass assessment. ✅ Infrastructure Planning and Design: Enables planners to align infrastructure with natural landscapes, optimizing routes and placements to reduce costs and environmental impacts. ✅ Flood Risk Assessment: Helps predict and model flooding in urban areas, crucial for designing effective water management and flood mitigation strategies. These benefits make LiDAR Point Cloud Surface Bare Earth data a powerful tool across multiple disciplines, enabling more informed decision-making and efficient management of resources and development projects. Have you incorporated LiDAR in your projects? Let’s discuss! #lidar #bareearth #cooperaerial #topography #aerial #mapping

Not all aerial images are created equal. ✈️ Ever wondered why buildings and mountains appear to lean in some aerial or satellite photos? It's because of perspective! This is where orthorectification comes in. This process corrects for distortions caused by camera tilt and terrain variations, giving you a precise, top-down view as if the image was captured perfectly straight down. ⬇️ Why is orthorectification important? - Accurate measurements: Measure distances, areas, and object sizes with confidence. - Detailed analysis: Get a clearer picture of your project area, ideal for land use planning, infrastructure mapping, and more. ️ - Seamless integration: Easily integrate orthorectified images with other geospatial data for comprehensive analysis. #orthorectification #aerialimagery #GIS #orthophoto #mapping

🌉 Digital Twin of a River catchment - provides an improved management and forecasting of flood alleviation, but is also helpful for habitat projects. It can be used on multidisciplinary projects, not only flood forecasting or habitat, as it is an asset to all parties. 🇪🇺 Concerning INSPIRE Directive, multiple themes cover water management; Hydrography theme is directly related to the study of the river, its characteristics, from the existing point of view. Other use of rivers, in INSPIRE themes, is covered by Transport Networks, as rivers are often a way to connect communities. On other point of view, the themes Protected Sites, and Habitats and Biotopes, are related to wild life preservation even in water bodies. Finally, the theme Agricultural and Aquaculture Facilities also relates to rivers and its usage for economic activities. And let's not forget the Energy Resources theme, as rivers are a major source of power. 🌐 "Having a river digital twin enables land managers, engineers and ecologists to be better informed on the full ecosystem, river and floodplain geometry and therefore make more balanced decisions when proposing interventions that influence the hydrology and ecology of the river corridor." - is stated by Storm Geomatics. 🛩 Data can be obtained from photogrammetry, created after drone flights, of from LiDAR, depending on the future usage. A point cloud is a deliverable that can be easily manipulated, but more conventional digital elevation models are also created. 🔗 You can find more detailed insights in this link https://lnkd.in/dB35UTe8, where the images of the video came from. 🥇 All drone flights for Digital Twins are performed by a certified pilot, so we always minimize risk for people, constructions, and vehicles. Safety first! #river #flood #climateaction #INSPIRE #hydrology #habitat #hydropower #protectedsites #transport #digitaltwins #dronepilot #lidar #photogrammetry
