🌍 Is moving to a wealthier country really the path to a better life? 💭 In today’s world, where remote work allows many professionals to earn a global income, the answer is not always as clear-cut as it used to be. Moving to a more advanced country can make sense if your current community lacks access to what your income can provide. But if you find yourself in a country where your money stretches further and your everyday expenses are manageable, you might want to think twice about relocating to a higher-cost economy. 🔄 The truth is, your wealth is relative to the poverty around you. For example, a $100K annual income may barely cover the cost of living in some high-income states in the U.S. Meanwhile, that same income can provide a much higher quality of life in many parts of Europe or Southeast Asia, where everyday costs are lower, and services are often more affordable. 🏛️ There’s also the issue of control and cost. Highly developed countries often impose strict regulations, censorship, and higher taxes to support the perks of their societies. As the world’s economies shift, so too does the advantage of being a skilled remote worker in a lower-income country. While governments may boast about rising GDP and wages, for those who work remotely and earn income from abroad, this growing parity could mean fewer incentives to stay. 🚀 What many call the "race to the bottom" is, for some, a race away from high costs and inflation. For many remote professionals, the only way to maintain a high standard of living is by seeking out communities where their income goes further, and that option may not be available forever. In a world of limited resources, both physical and economic, it’s essential to think critically about where we live and work – and how these choices impact our quality of life. #RemoteWork #CostOfLiving #GlobalEconomy #DigitalNomad #FutureOfWork #LivingAbroad

📖 Incredibly happy to share that after 2 years of intense work with Martina Bisello, Matteo Sostero, John Hurley and Enrique Fernández-Macías the final report is now out! Key takouts: ➡️ fast and steady recovery in employment following the COVID-19 pandemic in the EU benefited from proactive policy responses to the crisis and from resilient labour markets. ➡️ Almost 90% of regions across the EU had exceeded their pre-pandemic employment levels by 2022; however, significant regional disparities remain. ➡️ EU regions fared differently, depending on their economic specialisation and notably on the concentration of jobs in knowledge-intensive services that can be performed remotely. ➡️ The geography of telework across EU regions was primarily shaped by differences in occupational structure, and fast internet connectivity remains an essential enabling factor. ➡️ a number of initiatives to support remote work in rural, peripheral or marginalised areas through the creation of coworking spaces show how dynamism and diversity in rural economies can be promoted. Eurofound #remote #work #regional #coworking A special thanks also to all the reviewers and contributors: Giuseppe Croce, Mariano Mamertino, Ilaria Mariotti, Jaume Bages, Anita Füzi, PhD, Eugenia Miraglia and Christopher White

Global Line, a consultancy firm based in São Paulo, Brazil, and Worldwide ERC®’s Mobility Brazil released their most recent data report on the state of global mobility in Brazil. Although some trends have continued since the last survey in 2020, the work landscape has changed dramatically. This year, the Brazilian survey results were able to capture responses from a great number of locally and foreign-based companies. Thirty-two percent of survey respondents were companies based in Brazil, the survey’s highest recorded number so far. One hundred thirty multinational businesses were surveyed of various sizes, with 49% of companies reporting a workforce of 1,000 to 10,000, 30% reporting a workforce of up to 1,000, and 21% with a workforce of over 10,000 employees. While remote work was somewhat of a novelty pre-pandemic and then, during the start of COVID-19, a crucial way to keep businesses open, it has morphed into a critical business strategy for many organizations. You really can't make this up 😀 An internal #AI tool at Shared Services Canada | Services partagés Canada , using what I believe are internal / vetted references, is suggesting that working from home is more effective that working in the office! As public servants are mandated to work from their office 3 days / week starting September, very few are convinced of any real benefits for this approach, or that the decision was based on any real data or evidence. It will be interesting to see how this situation will evolve, if the mandate will remain 3 days / week, how some departments will be able to comply when they don't have available office space, how this will impact harrassment in the workplace, whether productivity and collaboration will increase, whether the downtown economy will be impacted, etc. Time will tell... https://lnkd.in/gZd4JfR8

Software Engineer | Author of The European Engineer newsletter and EuroTopTechJobs.com | Prev. Oracle Zurich & Amazon Barcelona
Is Switzerland worth it for Software Engineers in 2024? Let's discuss it. This week, I've shared a few posts on some aspects of life in Switzerland. I talked about: - The Zurich airport: how good it is, and how you can leverage it to live across Europe instead of just in Switzerland. - How much taxes you pay in Switzerland as an employee. - The mental health challenges that living in Switzerland as an expat might present. In the past, I also talked about how developers in Switzerland enjoy much higher salaries than developers in other countries in Europe, and, especially if working in big tech, how this can translate into high saving rates and substantial wealth building. I also talked about how expensive it is to raise a family in Switzerland, and what to make of this when planning your life abroad. I will add the links to all of the above in the comments to this post, so you can check it out in details if you're interested. In today's post, I want to draw some conclusions. All in all, I would say that being based in Switzerland as a SWE is still a solid choice. The pros: - High local salaries: 80k to 170k even in local, smaller companies. - High big tech salaries: 160k to 1M. - Reasonable taxes for employees, basically the lowest among all high-paying countries. - Trustworthy and stable government and administration. - Reasonable inflation. - Strong currency, especially during this geopolitically complicated decade. - Low crime and pollution, beautiful nature, amazing infrastructure. - Excellent location at the center of Europe. - Taxes for self-employed people can be optimised further and you can reach a 10% tax. - Living in Switzerland for 10 years gives access to one of the strongest passports. - Great welfare. - Multicultural, well-educated society. - Free, top quality universities and schools. - Easy to get by with just knowing English. - Many expats. - Access to top corporate careers, especially in tech and finance. - Not a bad place to start a company: reasonable taxes, high quality talent, funding etc. - Good place to build up wealth, especially as a single person with high income. - Bikeable. - Many lakes and rivers, even inside cities. - Strong deep tech industry. Good amount of high quality jobs for highly specialised devs. The cons: - High cost of living. - Suboptimal place to be based in as a remote/online worker. - Local language is hard (Swiss-German in particular). - Hard to integrate into the society. - Can be boring if you're young and/or single. - Very high costs for raising kids: kindergarten, nanny, etc. - Many rules: can't shower after 10 PM to not make noise, etc. - Risk of becoming a less attractive hub as tech jobs become remote and get offshored. - Local tech market is growing less than in other places. Companies are offshoring. All in all: still a very solid choice. If I had to look at the next 10 years though, I think being remote in LCLT might be better for most folks.

It’s been over four years since the COVID-19 pandemic, but the world isn’t quite back to “normal” yet. bit.ly/4eh4dZR Nowhere is that better evidenced than in how employees around the globe are responding to return-to-office (RTO) mandates. Of the world’s top business hubs, the patterns around office attendance vary widely. But if there’s one city close to the old normal, it’s Paris. The French capital trumps all its peers for in-office presence, with 3.5 days on average across 1,000 employees surveyed by the think tank Centre for Cities. That’s much higher than London’s 2.7 days a week or New York’s 3.1 days. Read more here: bit.ly/4eh4dZR
