Family Office Endowment Model. I'm always interested in the US university performance reporting because it has a big overlap with family office investments through different parts of the cycle. Michigan has outperformed other Ivy League schools due to high exposure to US stocks. Will we hear about their investment prowess when US equities underperform vs global or private markets? Family offices, like endowments, have the power of patient capital. Whether they choose to utilise this via illiquid assets or by taking a high conviction mentality to equities. 🧮 Yale’s Endowment Hits a Wall: When Private Markets Go Quiet Yale’s endowment, long the poster child of private market investing with its “Yale Model,” just posted one of the weakest returns in the Ivy League this year—5.7%. It’s surprising, but not totally. After riding the wave with a massive 40.2% return in 2021, the endowment’s hit a wall with nearly three years of low distributions from private market funds. Columbia and Harvard came out on top with returns of 11.5% and 9.6%, leaving Yale lagging. Here’s the reality: with exits in VC and private equity way down, returns are hard to come by. VC markets are practically stalled with IPOs and big M&As drying up to levels not seen since the 2008 crisis. Buyout activity? Still two-thirds down from its 2021 peak, although exit values have clawed back about 50% year-over-year. So what’s Yale’s approach now? They’re in for the long haul, and to be fair, their 10-year return of 9.5% shows they can play the long game. But it raises a question: when private markets go quiet, how much patience do you really have? Are you thinking differently about illiquid assets these days?
