The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has kicked off the offshore wind energy lease sale for the Gulf of Mexico. As of 9:00 EST (15:00 CET), BOEM will be receiving bids for three areas on the Outer Continental Shelf off Louisiana and Texas. Also in this article: Full list of prequalified bidders for the Gulf of Mexico offshore wind lease sale. The offshore wind energy areas (WEAs) being offered today include one site of 102,480 acres offshore Lake Charles, Louisiana, and two lease areas totalling nearly 200,000 acres offshore Galveston, Texas. According to information BOEM shared earlier, the three areas have the potential to accommodate over 3.6 GW of installed capacity which can power almost 1.3 million households. Seeing the capacities that the winners of the previous few lease sales announced after those auctions were completed, it is likely that the lease areas in the Gulf of Mexico could also house projects totalling much more than 3.6 GW. The Department of the Interior issued the final sale notice (FSN) for the Gulf of Mexico on 20 July, when US President Joe Biden announced the first-ever offshore wind auction in this area would take place on 29 August. The FSN, among other things, also provides a list of the companies that BOEM prequalified for the lease sale which has significantly expanded since the initial list was published in the Proposed Sale Notice (PSN). As reported in the Premium news on our sibling site Offshore Energy in March, BOEM had prequalified eight bidders by the time the PSN was issued, including Avangrid, Shell and TotalEnergies. The Final Sale Notice contains 15 companies, with Equinor and RWE joining the list, among others. (It is worth noting that not all prequalified bidders will necessarily participate in the lease sale.) TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with RWE to acquire a 50 per cent stake in two offshore wind projects in the German North Sea. The two projects, N-9.1 and N-9.2, located 110 kilometres off the German coast, were awarded to RWE in August 2024. The concession will run for a term of 25 years, extendable to 35 years. According to RWE, the sites are large enough to accommodate offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 2 GW each. TotalEnergies' acquisition of the two sites off the German coast will add to its already awarded N-12.1, N-11.2, and O-2.2 concessions, which should enable the firm to benefit from the synergies of its 6.5 GW German offshore wind hub and optimise its construction and operation costs, according to TotalEnergies. Preliminary studies on the marine environment, subsoil, and wind and oceanographic conditions have already been conducted on the sites N-9.1 and N-9.2 by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Investment decisions are expected to be taken by 2027 (N-9.1) and 2028 (N-9.2). Subject to necessary permits and confirmation of grid connection, offshore construction could start in 2029 and 2030, with full commissioning planned for 2031 and 2032, respectively. RWE and TotalEnergies are already partners in the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. In July, the two companies entered into an agreement under which TotalEnergies will acquire a 50 per cent stake in the project. #renewableenergy #wind #carbon60 #germany #engineering #netherlands #offshorewind #energy

RWE has awarded two contracts to Lamprell Energy Ltd Limited for the future supply of transition pieces to its two east coast UK offshore wind projects currently under development, Norfolk Vanguard West and Norfolk Vanguard East. RWE and Lamprell marked the signing of the contract with a small event at the WindEnergy Hamburg 2024 conference. The scope of works within the contract requires the manufacture and supply of 2 x 92 transition pieces for both wind farms, and the transportation of the structures to RWE's official marshalling port, once this has been decided. Lamprell Energy Ltd would fabricate the transition pieces using its serial production line, commissioned in 2023. The facility successfully completed its first project in 2024, delivering over 60 similar structures for a Scottish wind farm. Once fully constructed and operational, Norfolk Vanguard West and Norfolk Vanguard East would have a combined total installed capacity of 2.8 GW. The two projects are part of a trio of offshore wind farms, along with Norfolk Boreas, making up the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone off the UK east coast. RWE acquired the three projects in March 2024, and has since continued to develop them at pace as part of its commitment to growing green in the UK. Together all three RWE Norfolk projects would be capable of generating enough clean energy to supply the equivalent of around 4 million typical UK homes. The projects are set to play an important part in supporting the UK's aim to quadruple offshore wind capacity by 2030, deliver a net zero power system, and secure a reliable source of long-term clean, domestic power. Each of RWE's three Norfolk projects has a planned capacity of 1.4 GW. They would be constructed approximately 47 to 80 kilometres off the coast of Norfolk in East Anglia. The projects already have seabed rights, grid connections, Development Consent Orders and all other key permits. Onshore construction of the substations and undergrounded cable route between Necton and Happisburgh has already begun. RWE plans to enter the Norfolk Vanguard projects into a future Contracts for Difference auction. Once operational, the three Norfolk projects will be capable of generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 4 million typical UK homes - more than all the households in the London region. #renewableenergy #wind #engineering #carbon60 #energy #offshorewind

Havfram has signed a contract with Luxcara, an independent German asset manager specialized in clean energy infrastructure projects, for the transport and installation support of wind turbines for the Waterkant offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The agreement covers the vessel charter for transport and installation of 16 of the foreseen 18.5 MW turbines. Havfram will execute the works during the spring of 2028, using one of its advanced wind turbine installation vessels, currently under construction. Waterkant will be built approximately 90 kilometres off the island of Borkum and have a capacity of approximately 270 MW. Back in July, Luxcara signed a preferred supplier deal with Mingyang Smart Energy for the supply of 16 18.5 MW wind turbines for the Waterkant project. The Waterkant offshore wind project is expected to generate clean electricity for approximately 400,000 households and contribute to Germany's goal to reach a renewable energy share of 80 per cent in the country's power mix by 2030. #renewableenergy #wind #carbon60 #engineering #offshorewind #energy

On 19 September, Iberdrola inaugurated the 496 MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind project in France, the second largest in the country and the first in Brittany. The offshore wind farm is located 16 kilometres off the northwest coast of France in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in the English Channel. The project, backed by a EUR 2.4 billion investment, started development in 2012 and became fully operational in 2024 after three years of construction. The construction work supported more than 1,700 jobs, 500 locally, and involved various companies such as Siemens Gamesa (wind turbines), the Navantia, S.A., S.M.E-Windar Renovables consortium (foundations and transition pieces), Haizea Wind Group (towers), Prysmian (cabling), and Van Oord (installation). In total, more than 500 European companies worked on the project, said Iberdrola. The first Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbine was set up at the site in May 2023, while the last unit was installed by Fred. Olsen Windcarrier's jack-up Brave Tern at the end of last year. The 496 MW project produced its first power in July 2023 under the supervision of Iberdrola's maritime coordination centre based in Kerantour. Saint-Brieuc consists of 62 turbines, each with a capacity of 8 MW, the most powerful installed in France to date, according to Iberdrola. With an annual production of nearly 2,000 GWh, the wind farm will provide enough renewable electricity for approximately one million people. #renewableenergy #wind #engineering #france #energy #offshorewind
