This is why even recycled glass is inferior to the Frugal Bottle. Refilling empty glass bottles could be part of the solution, but how feasible is that in a country the size and population of Aotearoa New Zealand?
Experienced strategic leader in Grocery, Wholesale, On Trade, and FMCG sectors, with a strong track record in buying, sales, innovation and sustainability. Delivering renewal and growth.
I took this video in a large winery, they were blowing their own glass bottles using imported sand. It takes a temperate of 1500°c to be able to melt the glass into shape. What surprised me the most is that 50% of all the carbon emitted in making wine comes from just making the bottle, not only that, even more carbon is emitted to recycle glass. This specific wine factory was pumping thick black smoke into the air. A beautiful chateau and rolling hills of vineyards it wasn’t. This moment was part of my journey to find better less harmful ways to enjoy wine and to do what I could to support decarbonising the wine and hospitality industries. When we see large wineries shouting about their green agenda and launching new wine brands (existing wine juice) made from 91% recycled glass, I remember this factory and the thick black smoke surrounding it. Edit: the 50% carbon figure came from A. Navrro et al. / Journal of Cleaner Production (2016)

🍇 Australia's Wine Industry Leads in Sustainability The 2023 Impact Report from Sustainable Winegrowing Australia showcases notable advancements in sustainable practices within the Australian wine sector. A significant 41% of this year's total wine tonnage was certified sustainable, covering 32% of total vineyard area. The report highlights an exponential increase in certifications compared to 2020, with over ten times more wineries and over eight times more vineyards achieving sustainability certification. 🌱 Certification and Consumer Trust Enhancing Market Presence Mardi Longbottom of the Australian Wine Research Institute emphasized the growing trend of sustainability in the wine industry, driven by consumer demand and ethical commitments. The Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Trust Mark, now featured on an equivalent of 96.1 million bottles of wine, authenticates sustainability claims, which is crucial as 53% of global wine consumers trust only officially certified sustainability claims, according to the IWSR SOLA Report. 🌍 Commitment to Long-Term Environmental Goals The industry is not only expanding its sustainable practices but also pioneering in innovations like alternative varieties and eco-friendly packaging, such as the 'bagnum' format by Duxton Vineyards’ Rewild. Sustainable Winegrowing Australia’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 aligns with its 42% emissions reduction target by 2030, reflecting a substantial commitment to environmental stewardship across nearly 85% of Australia’s wine regions. #SustainableWine #EcoFriendly #WineIndustry #AustraliaWine #SustainabilityGoals

This article does a great job of emphasizing the shift towards sustainability as a necessity rather than an option for businesses, especially in the wine industry. It clearly defines two drivers of the equation, between consumer demand and business imperatives, in simple terms. Thanks Damien Wilson for making the call for the wine industry to recognize and attend the U.S. Sustainable Winegrowing Summit. https://lnkd.in/gHQQ8Rkq

Sustainability in Wine: Unveiling a New Frontier 🌱 📢 A landmark conference and exhibition on wine sustainability is set to debut in London. The event aims to unite experts from various fields to address the complexities of sustainability in the wine industry. Going beyond the basic definition, the conference will delve into how agriculture, responsible for nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, intersects with wine production. Discussions will include the impacts of climate change on wine cultivation and the industry's efforts to mitigate environmental damage. 🍇 The wine industry holds the potential for positive environmental impacts, from enhancing biodiversity to sequestering soil carbon. To achieve this, producers must blend traditional cultivation methods with scientific innovations like precision viticulture and carbon-neutral glass bottles. This global yet fragmented industry must adapt sustainability models to local climatic conditions, leading to various certifications and practices worldwide. 🛒 Consumers often find the sustainability landscape of the wine industry overwhelming. While retailers strive to simplify choices, producers play a crucial role in storytelling and transparency. By making sustainability part of their brand narrative, they can guide consumers in making informed choices. The diverse geographic spread of wine production means there are multiple "right" answers, making a universal sustainability model impractical. 🌍 Collaboration is key to advancing sustainability in the wine sector. Organisations like the Sustainable Wine Roundtable, International Wineries for Climate Action, and the Porto Protocol are making significant strides. A new event, Sustainability in Drinks (SID), will further this cause. Scheduled for October 14th in London, it will feature keynotes by Jancis Robinson MW OBE and Judith Batchelar OBE, and aims to become a pivotal annual event for the drinks trade. SID's vision is to foster positive change and provide valuable resources for sustainability in the industry. #Sustainability #WineIndustry #ClimateAction #SustainableWine #EnvironmentalImpact #WineConference #SustainablePractices
