Can we all agree that Disney is magical? Wanna know one of their secrets? Disney Resort in Orlando averages about 20 million guests every year. To keep the magic, the theme park employs over 77,000 employees, known as cast members - who consistently deliver an exceptional, world renowned guest experience. They are fully aligned and committed to one outcome. Ever wonder how they do it? I can tell you it is not accidental. Disney wrote the book on how to create a quality customer experience - and the way they’ve done it is both brilliant, and simple. One of Disney’s goals is to have their cast members make good decisions and do the right thing on a reasonably consistent basis - and it empowers them to do so using a basic values-based system. Decisions related to delivering on their value of exceptional customer service are to be made based on these four items, in this order: 01. Safety 02. Courtesy 03. Efficiency  04. Show As long as an employee can demonstrate this hierarchy in their decision making, they will never be second guessed. Here’s an example of how it works. Let’s say a cast member is a janitor and they are busy emptying a garbage can when they notice a lost guest.  They see there is no other cast member available to serve the guest.  They are responsible for making the decision to leave their post to take care of the guest.  In this case, they know that courtesy trumps efficiency. Now, if that janitor happened to be cleaning up a big dangerous spill where someone could slip and hurt themselves, and noticed this lost guest - they would know that they should make sure the area is safe before they help them - because they know safety trumps courtesy. Simple. Empowering. Effective. That's the power of values-based decision making, and how it can impact your culture and drive organizational goals. I am about to take off on my flight to Walt Disney World for spring break with my kiddos. I spent a lot of the week making lists upon lists for while I’m out. For the dog sitter, for clients, for work, for my future self. Wondering if this is a “good time” for this trip. We have 2 clients with acquisitions pending and one finalized last week; our flagship research out; 3 reports, packaging project and market alignments in process plus we are launching WorkTechCircle in two weeks and building out our new practioner facing website so I’m managing the dev team. But that’s just how work is. That’s just how life is. It’s busy. It’s messy. It’s everything all at once and all the time. Vacations are never at “convenient” times when you’re growing a business or leading a team; but they are always exactly when you need them most. If you haven’t booked time off this year - even to just stay home and rest your mind, here is your reminder to set time aside. The work will be there when you are back. One key to any company's success lies in understanding your business through the eyes of your customers. This became a guiding principle during my early tenure at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort as Resident Manager, where I was entrusted with creating an all-resort team meeting to unite the entire Grand Floridian Cast in celebrating the resort's ongoing success. Central to this endeavor was the creation of a slogan that not only echoed the ideals and values of Walt Disney but also reinforced Disney’s commitment to the behaviors expected from each Cast member. Two pivotal questions shaped this journey: 1)  What does the customer think when interacting with Cast members? 2)  How do each of the 3000+ Cast members at the Grand Floridian synchronize efforts to create Magic every day across the expansive resort property – either onstage, directly with guest interactions, or backstage in critical support functions? The narrative that unfolded was nothing short of Magical with our saying, “WE ARE MANY. WE ARE ONE. WE ARE DISNEY.” 1. WE ARE MANY.   Delivering the Pixie Dust – the essence of Disney magic – requires the concerted efforts of all Cast members. Collaboration becomes the cornerstone as each Cast member partners with others to contribute and deliver a world-class experience that transcends individual contributions. 2. WE ARE ONE.   From the perspective of our guests, the Magic crystallizes in a singular moment, embodied by one Cast member. This individual becomes the custodian of the 5 Disney Keys – safety, courtesy, show, efficiency, and inclusion. These Keys guide decisions and actions, ensuring an extraordinary and consistent experience for every guest, every time. 3. WE ARE DISNEY.   Beyond the individual roles and moments, we are Disney in its entirety. Upholding the legacy and brand established by the legendary Walt Disney becomes our collective responsibility. Last week we made RevOps magic during our offsite at Walt Disney World! 🏰✨ We did a lot more than soak up the enchanting atmosphere and thrilling rides (though those were certainly perks!) We learned, we grew, and we spent a lot of time connecting as a team. We dove deep into discussions on vital topics like intent-based communication, defining our value propositions, and exploring how we can enhance our collaboration and effectiveness as a team. We celebrated promotions and gave out awards (stay tuned for more details on those Monday! 🎉) We put our skills to the test in “drills” - working together through a full mock implementation in a single day. Imagine the excitement and chaos in the room! We learned that while it is possible to put together a full implementation in a day, the value that we’d bring to our clients decreases. There’s a reason that we take time to go through our process for an implementation - to make sure our clients are being understood and that we can curate a solution that is completely right for them. There’s something magical about coming together as a team to work hard and play hard.
