Access to healthcare isn't equal, especially when it comes to the five gynae cancers. There are many barriers which still get in the way of everyone having an equal opportunity to know their body well, spot their symptoms early and access the medical help they need to get diagnosed and treated quickly, so that they have the best chance of a good outcome. This World Cancer Day, and every other day of the year, we are working to help reduce inequality in cancer care. According to statistical data from the National Cancer Registry, approximately 1.17 million Poles 🇵🇱 struggle with cancer, which means that for every 100,000 people, 440 in our country have been diagnosed with cancer. The number of new cases annually reaches nearly 170,000. 😞 In other countries the situation is even worse - low awareness of the risk factors, barriers to access screening programmes, reduces opportunities to catch and treat the signs early are missed. 🗓️Today, February 4th, is World Cancer Day 🌍 Not only today, but every day we need to remember that the sooner we get a diagnosis, the greater chance of a full recovery. Women everywhere are entitled to have good health. They should have a healthcare system that empowers them and gives easy access to various services. This month during #cervicalcancerawarenessmonth, it’s important to remember cervical cancer is the fourth most prevalent form of cancer among women in almost all countries worldwide (1). Let’s change the facts so that we can eliminate cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers (2). Having regular screening tests every five years between the ages of 25-74 is the best way women and people with a cervix can protect themselves (2). Thank you to Dr Stewart Manning, who visited our office last week on behalf of the Yorkshire Cancer Community, to give his Cancer SMART talk. SMART stands for: ✔ Screening saves lives by prevention and early detection ✔ Making cancer an everyday conversation ✔ Awareness of unusual and persistent changes ✔ Reduce risk with a healthy active lifestyle ✔ Take action NOW against cancer Sharing knowledge about cancer, its treatment, and prevention methods is of paramount importance in our collective effort to combat this disease. Cancer remains a significant global health challenge, affecting millions of lives each year, but Dr Manning pointed out that treatments have improved tremendously in recent years thanks to research, early detection and advances in treatment. Knowledge is power, and sharing it fosters awareness, dispels myths, and encourages early detection, which is crucial for successful cancer outcomes. Along with resolutions and a fresh start for the new year, January marks #CervicalHealthAwarenessMonth. Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners play an integral role in championing Cervical Health for their patients across the lifespan. One of the most common threats to cervical health is HPV — the human papillomavirus (HPV), the culprit to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the very few cancers where science has identified the cause of the cancer (HPV accounts for 90%+ of cervical cancer cases), we have the methods and technologies to screen and treat pre-cancer, and we have a vaccine to help prevent cervical and other HPV-related cancers. One in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will be diagnosed with colorectal (colon or rectal) cancer in their lifetime. This disease affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people 50 years or older. #coloncancerawareness Incidence in those younger than 50, or young-onset colorectal cancer, is on the rise. Among those under age 55, the incidence rate is increasing by 1.5% every year.
