On December 19th, I celebrated a pivotal moment in my academic journey by successfully defending my thesis, titled "Transforming Peri-operative Care through Digital and Process Innovation: A Study of Surgical Procedures at Perugia Hospital." This accomplishment signifies the apex of my Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. This research originated from my enriching experience as an intern at the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, collaborating with the Department of Management Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Florence. At the core of this thesis is a comprehensive exploration of the real-world complexities of the surgical process, with a meticulous focus on identifying weaknesses. The outcomes of this endeavor not only establish the groundwork for further academic research but also provide tangible insights for healthcare institutions globally, advocating for advancements in surgical operations. The primary objective of this thesis is the digitization of healthcare procedures within the perioperative pathway, spanning from the waiting list to post-operative care and implantable device management. This initiative aims to leverage digital solutions to address identified challenges and optimize the entire surgical pathway. Central to the narrative is the transformative potential of process analysis within the surgical realm, underscored by a real-case study that serves as a benchmark for analogous efforts. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Professor Cristina Masella for her unwavering support and guidance, and to the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano for allowing me to contribute to this groundbreaking project. Additionally, I sincerely thank all the team members involved for their collaborative efforts. During my internship at the Foundation, my role as a process analyst empowered me to actively contribute to this transformative project, further fueling my passion for driving digital innovation within healthcare processes. As I ceremoniously close this chapter, I am excited to leverage the knowledge and skills acquired during my Master's program to make meaningful contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering. I am thrilled to announce that a poster featuring a project I contributed to was recently showcased at the 2023 IEEE NSS MIC conference in Vancouver, presented by Jean-Baptiste Michaud. I worked on this project during my internship at Sherbrooke University (January-May 2023), as part of my ongoing undergraduate studies, which I am set to complete in December 2024. Our project introduces an approach in medical imaging, employing deep learning to infer Synthetic-CT maps from Non-Attenuation-Corrected PET images. This innovation is particularly crucial for high-resolution PET brain imaging where conventional CT is not available, addressing challenges in image quality metrics and 3D reconstruction. In this project my contributions were: - Enhancing the 3D Architecture of the U-Net. - Developing a Hyper-Parameter Tuning Pipeline. - Optimizing Hyper-parameters for Image Generation. Hello everyone! I have been interning at the Computational Intelligence in Biomedical Imaging Lab here in NTU, Taiwan for some time now. We have been working on some very cool and interesting stuff here, which has also required me to get up to speed on learning about various techniques in Deep Learning which are concerned with image segmentation. Image segmentation is a technique which allows us to precisely locate and analyze very specific features within medical images. These can be anatomical structures or medical anomalies within the body which are captured by scans. This makes it easier for our machine to understand the specifics of, say, unusual overgrowth with certain parts of the body. The best use of such a technique can be put in cancer treatment where we can plan the type of treatment a patient can receive for their tumors and can also help track the progression of the disease and effectiveness of treatment. As a whole, this is something that can enormously enable medical decision making, and can be used to improve the quality of treatments. The following is a short literature review about such image segmentation techniques, and the results they have shown. I have tried to produce a study with as much technological variance as possible, so as to enable people to get to know about the various architectures which can be used in such an endeavor. I would encourage my network to help me identify what kind of knowledge gaps exist within the following review, and where could I improve in writing this so the information I have could be received better by y'all.
