Starting as a Chemical Engineer, I often found myself as one of the few women in the room. The challenges were many, from proving my technical abilities to overcoming biases. Yet, these obstacles fueled my determination. Transitioning to a tech solutions company brought new hurdles, but my engineering background helped me tackle complex problems and adapt quickly. Being a woman in male-dominated professions is challenging, but it also offers unique opportunities to lead and inspire. With perseverance and support, we can break barriers and excel in any field. Just finished Siemens Women Hack AI 2023 and wanted to share my thoughts on this amazing experience! Sustainability: All the challenges in the Hackathon involved promoting sustainability within Siemens’ wide-ranged business areas (and more). Also from the evaluation criteria and the questions/feedback from the judges, I got the impression that Siemens as a company values building scalable and realistic sustainable business practices and solutions. It was great to see that more companies care about sustainability in practice. Now that I’m better aware of more sustainable efforts that leverage ML in the industry, I’m excited to use my skills and knowledge to contribute to making our society more sustainable. ‘[Anything]’ is better than Perfection!: One message that really stuck with me from the presentation from the organizers was the phrase ‘Passion over Perfection,’ encouraging all of us to be more comfortable presenting anything at all, rather than spending time to ‘perfect’ it. In the challenge, I did spend a lot of time with data cleaning and feature engineering, but the message (and the fact that my coworkers were producing the results way faster than I did) drove me to share my work at a much earlier stage than that I usually would have. That worked out well and we were able to produce a Streamlit app for predicting the sustainability KPI of a given finance deal, visualizations analyzing the patterns in the data depending on the sustainability KPI, and a prediction model that identifies if the deal is likely to succeed or not, all in less than 3 days! Women: I cannot help mentioning that it was so much fun working with women. We stretched, danced (literally), remembered to take breaks during such a fast-paced event, and most importantly, encouraged each other and worked better together as a team! It was a great opportunity for me to connect with other female data scientists and widen my perspective. Thank you so much to everyone who made this happen, and especially my teammates and mentors from whom I learned a lot:)!
