In Napoleon Hill’s renowned book, Think and Grow Rich, there's a captivating story about Edwin C. Barnes, a man who personified the essence of desire. Barnes possessed a burning ambition to work with the legendary inventor Thomas Edison. This was no mere wish; it was a clear, steadfast goal. The Power of Desire: Edwin C. Barnes' Journey Despite lacking money or connections, Barnes had a precise vision and a fierce desire. He wasn’t just seeking any job with Edison; he aspired to be his close associate. Fueled by this burning desire, he took a daring step: he traveled to Edison’s office without an invitation or formal introduction. Barnes' initial meeting with Edison didn’t result in an immediate partnership. He started in a modest position, but this didn’t deter him. He worked with unwavering determination and focus, clinging to his vision. His persistence and commitment eventually captured Edison’s attention. When the right opportunity presented itself, Barnes seized it, proving his worth and ultimately becoming a trusted business partner of Edison. Lessons I learnt from Barnes' Story 1. Clarity of Vision: Barnes had a specific, well-defined goal. He didn’t just want to work with Edison; he wanted to be his partner. This clarity fueled his desire and directed his action. 2. Unwavering Determination: Despite starting from a humble position, Barnes remained steadfast. His strong desire kept him motivated and persistent, even during tough times. 3. Seizing Opportunities: When the right moment came, Barnes was prepared. His readiness and persistence paid off when he seized the opportunity to prove himself. Desire is a powerful starting point for achieving our goals. Nearly 16 months ago, I shared a wild idea and dream over coffee with Marc A. Newman that started “what if…(we in Chicago began managing The Philadelphia Center).” I’m big proponent of “first draft” thinking and this was most definitely a first draft thought. He saw value in it—we headed over to Lisa B. Lewis’ office to begin what became the professional adventure of a lifetime (aka Project Rocket Ship). This 16-month journey involved meetings on meetings; influencing and aligning; all the quant strategies and scenario planning; more aligning; calls, emails, texts at times and planes when Lisa and I had a few minutes connect—mountain tops, funerals, airplanes, islands—and fundraising. And we’re here!! Someone’s belief in your vision is one of the most humbling and inspiring gifts. Lisa, you’ve been unwavering and bullish on this idea from the beginning and every day since—thank you! You rallied your colleagues, gave me hope when I thought we should throw in the towel, and were just the most incredible brainstorming partner. I’m immensely grateful to you! Gratitude must be shared with easily the 30-40 people we worked with to make sure a program like TPC could embark upon this new chapter. My thanks to so many of you!! Critical place-based learning + practical application (urban experiential learning) with a robust toolbox of inquiry is the future of the liberal arts and an informed and engaged society. I’m grateful and energized to be doing this work and rebuilding a program in Philadelphia. We are doing our part. We are developing thinkers and doers who understand the realities of urban paradoxes, racial inequity, power, and discrimination. Our alumni are using their toolbox of inquiry and CQ and EQ to make the world a more just place.

Last week in my newsletter I profiled a woman who exemplifies determination and perseverance. Rachel Romer, Founder and Executive Chair of Guild, turned her idea into a $4+ Billion dollar business, only to have her entire world turned upside down in a split second. Here are a few reasons why I find Rachel so inspiring: 1. She recognized early on how broken the US college education system and set out to redefine it, making higher education more accessible to Americans. 2. She swung for the fences in her early days, cold emailing Chipotle with a sales outreach email, who then became her first customer at Guild. 3. Under Rachel's dynamic leadership, she grew Guild into a $4.4Billion company, with many of their clients being the Fortune 500 including Walmart, The Walt Disney Company and Target to name a few. 4. In August of 2023, at 34 she suffered a stroke that drastically altered her life and career trajectory - however despite her ongoing recovery, Rachel has not let that stop her from achieving her goals of accessible higher education within the US. 5. Despite stepping down from her role as CEO of Guild, Rachel remains Executive Chair of the company and has taken her experience with the healthcare system with her into the next phase of building Guild. Rachel's story is absolutely incredible and heart wrenching. Last week, I graduated from the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy. The past three years have challenged me to grow personally and professionally. And I cannot thank enough those that have supported me along the way. In retrospect, my biggest takeaway is not from the classroom. Instead, it’s the need for grit— the special combination of passion and perseverance. Because I can now laugh about it, I’ll share a (not-so-fun) anecdote. It was my first semester, and I had the brilliant idea that Capital Bikeshare would be my go-to transportation to the Hill Top. Well, a hidden pothole causing me to tumble into the streets of DC had other plans. Determined not to miss my class, I hailed an Uber. When I finally sat down, settled down (noticing I had a rip in my favorite pants), and pulled out my notebook, I realized I could feel my elbow beginning to literally swell up. When I started getting dizzy, I knew it was time to abort because things could get messy. I booked it for the hallway where, just a few steps in, I passed out. The result of accidentally skipping lunch and… crashing into a street. An unsettled undergrad came over to me and said, “you should probably sit down – you don’t look so good!” At that point, I knew it was time to call it quits… but just for that day. 😉 It’s a settling reassurance that even in today’s fraught, uncertain, and rapidly changing world, grit is the solution for achieving your goals in spite of the challenges we undoubtedly face along the way.
