Application of #lean concepts in highway construction is desperately needed if one calculates the huge costs involved 1. Capital blocked in terms of equipment, people and materials 2. Additional fuel consumption for users due to diversions and traffic jams 3. Time delay and inconvenience to users Earlier this week I was on a highway to Rajkot and it took almost 3 hours to cover 140 km. The reason, endless diversions and road closures for highway expansion, like the one seen in the image. Actual value adding work was going on in only 25% of these sites. What is the logic in constructing 12-15 flyovers and road widenings over a hundred kilometre stretch at the same time? Now travellers face diversions every few kilometres and travel time shoots up with each one. This will go on for atleast 2-3 years. Why not adopt core lean flow principle of "Take one, Do One and Finish One". Travel time will increase for 1-2 diversions at a time which is not much. Construction #resources can also be utilised effectively and shifted site to site.

Jharkhand Achieves Only 5.43% of Toilet Construction Target Under SBM-Rural https://lnkd.in/gCwY_4hG Minister Expresses Concern as Only 21,700 Units Built Against Target of 3.99 Lakh Key Points: Palamu completes only 13.34% of targeted toilet construction under SBM-Rural Madhupur division leads with 19.90% completion rate among 32 divisions Minister directs officials to expedite construction in remaining three months RANCHI – Jharkhand’s Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) Phase-2 has achieved only 5.43% of its toilet construction target for 2024-25. Minister Yogendra Prasad reviewed the progress at a recent meeting. “Time is running out for achieving our targets,” the minister emphasized. Regional Performance Palamu division faces significant challenges in toilet construction. Only 3,554 units have been completed against the target of 26,639. Meanwhile, Adityapur division shows the poorest performance. It has completed just 1.50% of its 6,593-unit target. However, Madhupur division emerges as the top performer. It has achieved a 19.90% completion rate. Other Districts Giridih, Gumla, and Hazaribagh show moderate progress. Their completion rates stand at 4.64%, 4.61%, and 3.97% respectively. Moreover, several districts struggle with resource allocation. Construction delays have hampered progress significantly. Future Plans The department has intensified monitoring of construction activities. Officials must submit weekly progress reports. Furthermore, special teams will assist underperforming divisions. These teams will help overcome local challenges. In addition, the department plans to engage more contractors. This will help speed up construction work.
