The latest figures published on Friday from the Department of Housing show 4,027 children were living in Emergency Accommodation in January. An increase of almost 600 children in 12 months. Earlier this week the government were awarded a D- grade for their lack of action on family homelessness in Children's Rights Alliance #ReportCard2024. Amongst the recommendations contained in the report are ensuring that all children living in emergency accommodation have access to a child/family support worker as well as increased investment in homeless prevention services. #EndChildPoverty

#homelessnessweek2024 - Our Sustaining Tenancies team provides practical supports to people who are struggling to maintain their tenancy. The program supports vulnerable people from all walks of life with a range of tenancy-related challenges, including: 🏠 Cleans and declutters for hoarding and squalor conditions 🏠 In-home capacity building for property care 🏠 Capacity building for social inclusion and self-advocacy 🏠 Housing advocacy with property managers 🏠 Facilitating access to emergency relief and food security 🏠 Health and wellbeing supports In the 2023 calendar year, the Sustaining Tenancies team provided case management support to 678 individuals and families. In this housing crisis, it's not just securing housing that matters. Ensuring that people are safe and empowered within their tenancies is also crucial to breaking the cycle of chronic homelessness and helping people to live with dignity. Last Year 178 Women and Children resided at The Denise House, AND 450+ Women and Children received support through our 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬. What does this mean? Simply put, you DO NOT have to reside in our Shelter to access our services. 🦋 Our outreach counsellors meet with women (virtually or in safe public spaces) to develop a safe plan to leave an abusive home. 🦋We provide on-going support for women and children after they have left the shelter for as long as they need it. 🦋Our supports are individualized to meet the unique needs of each woman including emotional supports, legal referrals, housing, financial literacy, and employment readiness. 🦋Our Child & Youth Outreach Worker provides multiple services for children & teens who have experienced, been affected by, or are at risk of abuse. Including 1:1 supportive counselling and therapeutic, supportive group counselling. 🦋We focus on prevention and awareness to stop the intergenerational cycle of violence. Need Help?
