Earlier this week, Regional Measure 4, a $20 billion bond measure set to appear on the November ballot across the nine-county Bay Area, was officially removed from the ballot after a series of lawsuits. The bond measure would have significantly increased affordable housing production, a key element to solving family homelessness in the Bay Area. Check out this article from Hamilton Families' Strategic Communications & Storytelling Intern, Micka Gregoriou, providing a high-level overview of what happened and what we can look forward to. https://lnkd.in/gHqmiwm7 #HamiltonFamilies #HamFamSF #EndFamilyHomelessness #HousingFirst #CommunityStrong #AffordableHousing #HousingIsAHumanRight #WeekendReads

For those who may be on the fence regarding the Bring Chicago Home real estate transfer tax ballot initiative, please reading this thoughtful analysis from a Chicago small business owner.
Just posted my full opening statement from this afternoon. Why Business Owners Should be a Yes for Bring Chicago Home. Was cut short during my 5 min intro at SBAC & the Chamber's Forum on the proposed Chicago RETT increase (https://lnkd.in/gtCxd2Se) There is no bogeyman here. I know there is more real estate representation than people experiencing/addressing homelessness on LinkedIn, but its worth seeing some other facts (https://lnkd.in/gu2Jc2pG)

I'm proud of Houston for leading the way. Kelly Young & I sit on Midtown Management's Board together. We had a recent conversation about what Houston's unhoused population needs & it boils down to 3 things: 1️⃣ Affordable Housing - like REAL affordable housing 🏘 2️⃣ Getting Drug Dealers off the streets - they target the unhoused which makes getting them off the street EVEN harder. 3️⃣ Funding - we had a ton funding via COVID, but that's now GONE. It costs ~$1200/mo to house someone, there are less than 5,000 unhoused folks in HTX, that's ~$72M annually...That's NOT a huge number. AND I'm going to add a Number 4️⃣ Talk to everyBODY about this | REGISTER to Vote | Vote | Write a letter to your local city council person | DO Something - don't think it's not your problem too. https://lnkd.in/gpX93tH6

Grants Pass, Oregon, recently faced scrutiny over its anti-camping law, leading to a Supreme Court review. With around 600 homeless people, the city’s vague zoning ordinances highlighted the urgent need for more explicit land use rules and better shelter options. Like in ABQ, planners and city officials around the country are challenged to find long-term solutions. Washington County’s approach—reducing homelessness by 35% through outreach and support services—offers a promising model. Meanwhile, cities like Denver and Atlanta are exploring "micro-communities" using shipping containers for housing. This situation underscores the need for innovative, inclusive planning that addresses the needs of all community members. #HousingSolutions #HomelessnessAwareness #InclusivePlanning https://lnkd.in/gV4xSFkA

Is investing in reentry programs and services is a community issue? Investment from the community in programs and services that support individuals reentering society after being incarcerated is a significant concern for the community. By assisting those in the process of transitioning back into society, communities can reduce the likelihood of re-offending, enhance public safety, and create a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere for all residents. Take a few moments to read an article by Thrive Communities that discusses this very topic. Bridging the Gap: Addressing the Insufficient Funding and Assistance for Reentry Programs can be found on https://buff.ly/3W1tRdn.

Title: Ensuring Safe Havens: Advocating for Inclusive Housing Solutions for Abuse Survivors In my unwavering commitment to advocate for affordable and accessible housing, I find it imperative to shed light on the critical need for housing solutions tailored to survivors fleeing abuse. The journey towards healing begins with a safe and supportive environment. Minnesota, home to commendable Emergency Shelters, plays a pivotal role in offering refuge to survivors. However, our advocacy must extend beyond conventional approaches. Survivors often grapple with unique challenges, such as the presence of non-traditional extended family members, including teenage sons who may not fit the eligibility criteria for mainstream shelters. Cultural nuances must be intricately woven into the fabric of housing services. In Minnesota, where vibrant African immigrant communities thrive, it becomes paramount to address their specific needs. Understanding and accommodating these requirements are integral steps in ensuring that housing services are not only accessible but also genuinely supportive. As advocates, let's champion housing solutions that go beyond the standard, embracing diversity in familial structures and cultural backgrounds. By doing so, we empower survivors to make choices that align with their unique circumstances. Together, we can foster a community that stands united in its commitment to providing safe havens for all survivors, irrespective of their cultural or familial intricacies. Let's elevate the conversation around inclusive housing, ensuring that no survivor is left without the support they need to rebuild their lives. #HousingForAll #SurvivorEmpowerment #InclusiveHousing #EndAbuse #MinnesotaAdvocacy 🏡💙

Veteran Housing Corp says that IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF A PERMANENT AND LASTING SOLUTION TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND HOMELESSNESS, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS BROKEN AND NOT WORKING FOR AMERICAN TAXPAYERS Veteran Housing Corp would ask every TAXPAYER to demand and get answers from their elected and appointed government officials the below questions as they relate to any affordable, workforce, or supportive housing project in your community! 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU

Yet another distressing incident, this time a homeless individual attacking an elderly man in Whittier. The time for action is now, and fortunately, Whittier has a mayor who is committed to restoring safety to their city, unlike Mayor Bass of Los Angeles. While Governor Newsom's directive to clear homeless encampments may not bring about significant change, there is hope for Whittier. The homeless industrial complex, which has squandered taxpayer dollars for over a decade and led to a decline in residents' quality of life, must be dismantled. It's high time for substantial change.
