This past weekend, Foley & Lardner LLP's long-time Managing Partner, Stan Jaspan, passed away unexpectedly. Stan was an outstanding lawyer and leader who worked his entire career at Foley, and in his 25 years as Managing Partner (1999-2024), the firm reached remarkable heights. While many have written about Stan’s impact and legacy, I thought I would share a short personal anecdote about how he changed my life and, in the process, taught me a valuable lesson on leadership and loyalty. -------------- While I was an associate, a family member got very sick. After more than two years in search of a cure, a “cutting edge” surgery was proposed. However, under the terms of the firm’s health insurance plan, this surgery was deemed to be “experimental” and not covered. After multiple levels of appeals, I was instructed to have a call with Stan to plead my case. At this time, I didn’t know Stan, and I was fired up, frustrated and ready to let him have it…But, once I got on the call, I was met with compassion and empathy. Stan said: “Jon – I know our insurance plan isn’t perfect, and it’s my responsibility to do what’s consistent with our culture and what’s best for our future. Regardless of what the terms of the insurance plan say, it’s clear that your family member needs this surgery, and we want you to be at Foley for the long-term. So, go ahead with the surgery. If the final appeal fails, we’ll find a way to make you whole on the back end. And, if you don’t have the cash now to pay for it, we will get you the cash now to cover it until you can pay us back once we make you whole – I’ll even write you the check myself, if need be. Your family’s health is what is most important”. Thankfully, it never came to that. But, Stan’s approach and offer still sticks with me all these years later. Everyone knows that Stan knew how to drive a hard bargain to hit the bottom line (it’s part of what made him an excellent steward of the firm). He could have easily said – tough luck – such is life. He could have treated me like a cog in the law firm machine. He could have viewed my situation as another line item expense to be avoided. But, he didn’t – instead, he put my family first, and when someone extends that level of commitment/loyalty to you and your family, you don’t forget it. Instead, you seek to replicate it in your own actions. And, before you know it, you have an organization/firm rooted in people that value commitment/loyalty. I am certain it was actions like these that have served as the foundation of Foley’s tremendous success over the last 25 years. Stan understood what it meant to be a great leader. He led with loyalty, compassion and integrity and truly cared about his impact on Foley and the people within it. For that, and so much more that he did, we should all be grateful.
