Here's an opportunity for us to build toward next year 2024 and every year thereafter - "30in30" - Month for Human Rights - as below !! "30in30 - From Remembrance to Equity, Inclusion & Human Rights 2023" ( November 11 to December 10 ) - A possible shared effort to get all Canadians to pause and fully consider the real meaning and underlying significance of Remembrance Day - as well as its visceral connection to the International Day for Human Rights - let's consider the fact that there are 30 days between November 11 ( Remembrance Day ) and December 10 ( the International Day for Human Rights ) with December 10th of course being the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( UDHR ) in 1948 ! As the UDHR - in its 75th anniversary year - has 30 Articles - one for each of the 30 days that separate these two reflective moments in our shared provincial, national and international consciousness - "30in30 - From Remembrance to Equity, Inclusion & Human Rights" is an opportunity to consider each of the Articles - day by day - as we travel from "remembrance" to why it was and is that we engage(d) in such violent forms of conflict resolution - to the preservation and/or pursuit of freedom, equity, inclusion, fairness and human rights !! Understanding the significance of the 30 day connection between Remembrance Day and the International Day for Human Rights - the "30in30" month long learning initiative provides the space to more creatively apply an equity and justice informed understanding of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, our Human Rights Codes and Commissions, the Canadian Human Rights Act and other of our equity and justice relevant domestic laws and policies - as well as how they connect with the full spectrum of international human rights legal instruments. Instruments such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ( UNDRIP ), the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination ( ICERD ), the twin International Covenants on - Economic, Social and Cultural Rights ( ICESCR ) and Civil and Political Rights ( ICCPR ), the Convention on the Rights of the Child ( CRC ), the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ( CRPD ), the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women ( CEDAW ), the Statement on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity ( December 2008 ) and many critical others ! In this the 75th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( UDHR ) - Colour of Poverty - Colour of Change encourages everyone to creatively harness the 30 days as and how they wish - and in whichever way makes most sense to them - to connect your special events or regular programming or otherwise take best advantage of the opportunity for teaching and learning and for taking human rights ACTION !!
Today is International Human Rights Day. Since colonization, Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people have continuously had their human rights violated. At NWAC, we believe Indigenous women are holders of inherent human and Indigenous rights, including self-determination, justice, freedom, peace, and dignity.
