Adaptations in Action! 🧑🦽This week’s top tip is for Remote Keypad Controls Did you know? 🤔 This adaptation is very popular among drivers who have experienced a stroke and are left with reduced functionality on one side, and is often used in conjunction with a left foot accelerator pedal. If you have functional use of only one arm, a remote keypad attached to a steering aid enables you to steer and operate the auxiliary controls, such as the indicators and wipers, with one hand. There are various shapes and sizes of keypads available. The control can be mounted on either the left or the right side of the steering wheel, and can also easily be removed and switched off when not in use, for example if someone else wishes to drive the vehicle. FACT! Herts Ability has a fleet of dual controlled vehicles with a range of driving and transfer adaptations. Every vehicle is fitted with dual controls for safety and insurance purposes and all assessments take place in a dual controlled car. A client can use their own (or an instructor’s vehicle) if it is fitted with dual controls. This is a sad reality for many of the people we seek to help out at Luke 15 Automotive. Families are forced to decide between food, clothing, a roof or car repairs. Sadly car repairs are often the item that gets cut out of necessity and pushed well beyond safe limits often putting themselves, their families and others at risk. We might think, park the vehicle, use public transportation, ride a bike, phone a friend or family member.. while those options might work for some, up here in the North, those don’t always work, many people are out here with out friends or family and need to drive to get to work because there is limited public transportation options. This family was able to save some money to purchase the parts with our discount, and with no labour charges they will be able to get most of their needed repairs done now and have a vehicle back that is safe for them and their family. Repairs needed for this vehicle were front and rear brakes, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, sway bar links, shocks, and tires. If you are wondering, Luke 15 Automotive is a non-profit auto shop where we fix vehicles for those in need for free (no labour) and parts are at cost as a way to give back to our community and to give a hand up to those in need. This has been made possible through the support of people and businesses not just in the Grande Prairie region, but we have received support from people in other countries as well, all of which we are thankful for.
