Sanitation workers and rag pickers, despite being vital to our cities’ cleanliness, face immense challenges. Caste prejudices force Dalit sanitation workers into dangerous jobs like cleaning sewers, while rag pickers endure unfair treatment and health risks sorting waste. Our “People’s Agenda for Just Futures” demands change. We struggle for sanitation workers’ rights and dignified working conditions. We advocate for rag pickers’ formalization and social security. Together, let’s dismantle social stigma and build a future where sanitation workers and rag pickers are recognized as sanitation heroes, not outcasts.

As we navigate the transition ahead, we aim to be as intentional as possible about passing off the work we've done together and our combined legacy in alignment with the values we've always tried to put forward. Our commitment to localizing this work and our resources remains steadfast as we work to center and uplift local stakeholders to lead the way in sanitation advocacy. Why? We believe in the power of locally-led solutions and recognize the importance of empowering those closest to the issues . Stay tuned for updates on the local organizations that will be the stewards of the resources and toolkits we've created together under the FSMA umbrella. #SanitationAdvocacy #ShiftThePower #Sustainability

SACH created a dedicated washing area for laundering clothes, providing a convenient and hygienic solution for communities in need. This designated space is designed to address the challenges of inadequate washing facilities and improve public health and sanitation. By offering a safe and accessible place to wash clothes, the initiative helps reduce the burden on families who often lack basic amenities. #WashingArea #CommunitySupport #Sanitation #CleanLiving #HealthAndHygiene #CSRInitiative #PublicHealth #SocialGood #CommunityDevelopment #EmpoweringCommunities #Sustainability #ClothesWashing #CommunityImpact #CleanCommunity #CSRInitiative #CommunityEmpowerment #PoultryFarming #SocialImpact #EconomicUpliftment #SustainableLivelihood #HRDP #PartnershipForChange #EmpoweringCommunities #CSRinAction #TogetherWeGrow #SkillDevelopment #PovertyReduction #HDFC_CSR #Sach #IncomeGeneration #BuildingFutures #CommunitySupport #meghalaya #TowardsABetterTomorrow #HDFCBankParivartan #ParivartanbyHDFCBank

If you missed the Plant-Based Defaults to Drive Change and Elevate Your Advocacy Webinar, see the link below. The expert panel led by Laura Lee Cascada from Better Food Foundation, Björn Jóhann Olafsson from Faunalytics, and Dr. Shabnam Islam from Greener by Default dived into the peer-reviewed science behind plant-based defaults and 'nudges' and recent case studies to demonstrate how plant-based by defaults work to drive down carbon emissions, reduce costs, and offer more inclusive dining for businesses, campuses, hospitals and conferences. https://lnkd.in/gtsdDJnX #plantbaseddefaults #plantbased #foodemissions #scope3 #foodsystems #behavioralscience #nudge

This #GlobalHandwashingDay, the world is reflecting on the theme “Why are clean hands still important?” It’s because the simple act of washing hands with soap and water can save lives and make communities safer! 🧼💧 🧼 World Vision has made great strides by investing in hand hygiene programs and expanding access to handwashing facilities, strengthening public health and economic resilience. In 2023 alone, we reached 2.9 million people with household handwashing facilities. 🧼 We’re also leading efforts to improve disability inclusion in water, sanitation, and hygiene programs (WASH) programs—setting standards and ensuring equitable and accessible services—enabling clean hands for everyone. Our WASH UP! program, created and implemented in collaboration with Sesame Workshop in 18 countries, empowers children as handwashing champions in their families and communities. Have a look at the great work these kids are doing in Honduras: https://lnkd.in/gxsSEnrV 🙌🌍

Sanitation Rights for NT-DNT Communities Did you know that 80% of NT-DNT community members are forced to resort to open defecation due to their criminalized, nomadic, and landless status? India’s nomadic communities are either defecating in the open or struggling to access unsafe and filthy public toilets. Their sanitation needs are being ignored, and it's time to change that. Join our campaign #हक्कांचंकाय and demand that decision-makers address the basic sanitation rights of NT-DNT communities. Let's ensure everyone has access to clean, safe, and dignified sanitation facilities. #whataboutrights #ntdnt #sanitationrights #supportntdnt #basicrights #inclusivedevelopment #socialjustice #humanrights #endopendefecation

Founding Director of Project for Sanitation Justice @ SDSU, Professor of Public Administration & Criminal Justice
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR RESTROOM IS? Thousands of people in San Diego County and across the U.S. do not know where they will be able to use a toilet the next time they need one. Public restroom access is a cornerstone of public health, an internationally-recognized human right, and an essential part of basic human dignity. The latest paper from San Diego State University's Project for Sanitation Justice features interviews with over 100 guests of Think Dignity's programs regarding their experiences trying to access toilets and other basic sanitation necessities while experiencing homelessness in San Diego. These interviews drive home just how important safe, free, and consistent access to toilets is – not just for unhoused people, but also for the many other people who rely on public restrooms. We argue that ensuring toilet access is among the most basic ways governments can support not only public health but also social and economic mobility. The paper concludes with a vision of sanitation justice that centers the voices of those most affected by sanitation deprivation.
I am thrilled to share our recently published open access research on sanitation justice 🚽 🚾 . This paper, led by Megan Welsh Carroll, PhD, MSW and co-authored with awesome colleagues Rebekah O'Donnell, Adriana Rios, Lahiru K., Giovanna Zampa, Jennifer K. Felner, PhD, MPH, and Jerel Calzo, highlights how sanitation deprivation in the US functions as punishment regime. Further, we argue that sanitation justice is environmental justice.
