Provocative piece of research on the UK medal table from The Sutton Trust. But completely misses the point. It's not that public school alumni are too good at sport, it's that Britain's big problem is lack of sports participation amongst the general public. Almost a third of children and young people are inactive. This means 2.3 million children and young people do less than an average of 30 minutes of activity a day. Access to sports and activity facilities is at the root of the problem. It's not only unjust, it costs the country a fortune in lost productivity. Fixing the sports participation problem will yield huge dividends for the country. And help Britain regain its rankings in the medal table.
🚨 NEW: 33% of Team GB medallists at the Paris 2024 Olympics went to private school. As the Olympics comes to an end, we have looked at the educational backgrounds of the athletes bringing home medals for Britain, finding a strong link between private education and elite sporting success. As with previous Olympic games, those who were privately educated are overrepresented among Team GB's medallists this year. They are four times more likely to have attended a private school than a member of the UK population (7%). Compared to Tokyo 2021, the proportion of our country's medallists who were privately educated has dropped by 7 percentage points. But progress has not been linear over time. 40% of Team GB medallists were privately educated at Toyko 2021, 31% at Rio 2016, and 36% at London 2012. Additionally, some Olympic sports remain heavily dominated by those who attend private schools, including rowing, equestrian events and swimming. In terms of state education, the majority of our medallists were educated at comprehensive schools, at 52%, but this figure has slightly decreased from 55% in 2021. 8% went to grammar schools (compared to 5% in 2021). As for university attendance, 60% of Team GB medallists went to university, with 2% attending Oxbridge and 14% attending a Russell Group university. This analysis gives us a crucial insight into the social and economic circumstances Team GB's medallists grew up in, helping us to better understand the educational pathways of elite Olympians ⤵ https://lnkd.in/ejGwuDdf

Rehab x Sport Science My first PhD is in rehab science and I did this because that was my biggest weakness at the time, I was fascinated by wanting to learn how to take an athlete from injury back to their game. My second PhD is in sport science, because I wanted to learn how to use advanced statistics to add objectivity into the return to play model. Combing these two fields with this example using Kinexon data as the proxy. The goal is to hit 80% for today’s session before moving to full practice participation. ⚽️Previous research 👨💻 The study aimed to assess the physical match performance among senior and youth soccer players from a Scottish Premiership club during the 2021/2022 season. Analysis revealed for all examined variables no significant differences between first team and U-18 players and no significant differences between playing level by position interaction. Across both teams, Centre Backs compared to Wing Backs, showed a 295 m lower high-intensity distance, and performed on average 36 fewer very-high intensity decelerations. Comparing to Wide Midfielders, Centre Backs showed lower total (1297m), high-intensity (350m), and sprint (167m) distances.
