The awesome ' Creative Rockstars' Gang. October 24 Meet. 🤩🥰 Today's Creative Rockstar meeting was a reminder of why I love being part of this group. Meeting with a bunch of creative minds, all facing similar challenges, makes everything feel more real and manageable. We discussed topics such as hiring, retention, and appraisals—areas that don’t always get the attention they deserve but are so essential to building a strong team. A few big takeaways from today's meeting: Hiring for mindset over skillset: We talked about how it’s not just about finding the "perfect" skill match but hiring people who really vibe with your company culture. Skills can be taught, but the right attitude is gold. Retention through appreciation: This really hit home—people don’t just stick around for a paycheck. It's about making them feel genuinely valued, giving them room to grow, and recognizing their contributions. A little appreciation goes a long way. Appraisals that actually matter: We discussed reviews in favor of ongoing conversations. Constant feedback keeps everyone aligned and builds stronger connections and teams. What made it special, though, was the openness. Hearing others share their struggles and successes felt like a reminder that we’re all in the same boat, just trying to figure it out as we go. When you are building products that your users don't care, someone else is out there creating what they actually need.   Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure listening to one and only Uri Levine at the opening event of @ChaiTech organized by the fantastic Daniel Warner The energy in the room was electric, It felt like everyone was finally getting together after being apart for too long—eager to connect, share ideas, and be part of something bigger. Uri shared his journey at Waze with such a humorous and insightful perspective on life and business.  Here are my three key takeaways: 📉No Bad Decisions, Just Bad Results - You can't predict the outcome of different choices, but you can definitely tell when a result stinks. If you don't like the outcome, make a new decision. Simple as that! 🤥Firing vs. Hiring - Hiring is easy compared to firing. You know pretty quickly if you've hired the right person. Be bold—if someone doesn’t fit your team, make the tough decision to let them go. It only gets harder the longer you wait. 🎟️Build Products People Actually Need - Focus on solving real problems. When people need and want to use your product, you've hit the sweet spot. As someone who lives and breathes #productmarketfit, hearing Uri emphasize its importance was like getting a gold star from a mentor. 🌟 The Tale of the Mismatched Puzzle Pieces 🚀 A few months ago, I was approached by a company that had everything going for it—or so it seemed. They had a fantastic product, a well-researched market strategy, and a vision that could rival the best in the industry. But despite all these strengths, they were struggling to take off. Curious to see what was holding them back, I dove in, and it didn’t take long to spot the issue. The team, while talented, was like a box of mismatched puzzle pieces. Each person had their strengths, but they weren’t clicking together. They were working in silos, communication was clunky, and the culture was… well, it was like trying to start a fire with wet wood—lots of effort, but not much spark. So, I suggested a shake-up. Not in terms of firing people (that’s rarely the answer), but in aligning their roles and fostering a culture where collaboration and positivity could thrive. We redefined roles, encouraged open communication, and focused on building trust among team members. And you know what? "I'm not going to make a decision unless I know how to explain that decision." That quote from Brian Chesky, CEO at Airbnb, to Adam Grant encapsulates so much of what's missing in the conversation about #trust and #transparency at work. Trust is the most essential ingredient in organization performance. Without it, people spend more time worrying about what's really going on than they do focusing on what matters to the business: their customers. Transparency means explaining the rationale behind decisions, especially the logic behind hard ones that impact employee's lives -- like Airbnb's sizable round of layoffs back in 2020. "[There's] literally a half century of evidence showing that if you have to deliver a negative outcome, if you can explain a fair process behind it, and people understand that, they're more accepting. They may not agree with it, but they'll understand it." -- Adam "There's a difference between people trusting you and agreeing with you. Your employees don't need to agree -- if you're leading a company of thousands of employees, I hope they don't all agree with you!" -- Brian In research by The Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp), the most profitable, fastest growing, highest performing organizations had one factor in common: people were 11X more likely to say they trusted their leadership. Why? If you trust leadership, and know they're going to be open with you about hard decisions, you're able to focus on the job -- and according to Slack research you're much more likely to "go the extra mile." Can you go too far? Sure, but the consequences are much higher for under-communicating than over-communicating: “Leaders are 9X more likely to get criticized for under-communicating vs over-communicating. If you over-communicate, people might think you're boring and repetitive -- that’s not the end of the world. What do most cofounders get wrong about allocating Roles and Responsibilities? Instead of owning Roles , consider owning Metrics Owning metrics instead of roles specially early stage, may be interesting for several reasons ; Here are 10 thoughts : - Roles are fungible (founders need to do what’s necessary) ; metrics need not be - Roles can get fuzzy as performance shifts ; metrics are clear - Metrics are objective and reduce bias - They are outcome focused. Allows for creativity. Roles have boundaries - Metrics are super easy to share and communicate - Hitting metrics shows progress - Metrics are comparable and useful for resource allocation - Metrics tuck into one another and so can be prioritized, no drama about whose role is key - Focused on results not activity - Slipping metrics can enable early scrutiny, no reason to hide failures And some psychological benefits - reduced loss aversion (no role to give up) - Reduced ego ; loose ties with specific tasks. Tasks service the metric - Team orientation . Can’t hit the metrics by yourself - Feedback is objective so doesn’t feel so personal - Implies repetition so you’ll always have another crack at it >> Cofounders : Go embrace a metric !

One of the most common questions I get from aspiring professionals is how they can get into product management. The truth is, it's a tough time to break into product right now because many of us are out of work looking for our next opportunity.
