#ChidimmaAdetshina's story sparked a debate across Africa this week concerning identity and inclusivity. From being a Miss South Africa finalist to becoming Miss Universe Nigeria, her journey raises a critical question: Who gets to belong? This event reflects the everyday challenge of inclusivity and belongingness in cities like Addis Ababa. Can Addis Ababa blend Development with Inclusivity? While the city is rapidly expanding its infrastructure, professionals project the city's population to be 9 million by 2035, (1) Like the Chidimma controversy, one might ask: For whom is the city being developed? Past discussions around the Addis Ababa Master Plan have shown the significance of inclusive planning. (2) The corridor project is a lesson for community inclusion where no one is left behind. (3) Are we unintentionally pushing out the people who shaped the city's unique identity? (3) Cities often face dilemmas—development vs. preservation, plans vs. reality. Years ago, Addis Ababa built the majority of its roads for vehicles when data clearly showed most residents used Non-Motorized Transport. (4)   The city's recent street lighting project prioritizes aesthetic goals. Most streets lack safety and accessibility due to the absence of light. The question, “Who are we building our streets for?” caught the attention of many urbanists. Addis Ababa has the potential to use inclusive development and embrace heritage and diversity.  Here is what cities should consider. - Pubic spaces tell the story of the collective.  - Development projects should incorporate all. - Urban policies should encourage cultural protection.   How can one build an inclusive city? I had the privilege of being part of a reconciliation mission to Rwanda and Burundi on 2014. FACTS AB○UT RWANDA Y○U DIDN'T KN○W 🇷🇼 • Women make up 64% percent of the Rwandan parliament. •Rwanda was once còlonized by Germany and Belgium. •Rwanda is the smallest country in East Africa. •In spite of Rwanda’s small size, it is made up of several diverse ecosystems. • Rwanda’s local language is Kinyarwanda, though French, English, and Swahili are widely spoken. •Rwanda is one of the safest countries in the world. •Rwanda and Burundi used to be the same country. •The Rwandan genicide was 30 years ago. •Rwanda is landlocked. •Animal and environmental conservation is a big priority. • Rwandan coffee is too good. •Once a month, the country participates in a mandatory national community service initiative. •Tourism is one of Rwanda’s fastest-growing industries. •Kigali, Rwanda is the clèanest city in Africa. •Rwanda hosts a car-free day to promote exercise and healthy living. •Rwanda is home to some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas •Rwanda is a predominantly Christian country, with around 60% of the population belonging to the Catholic Church. •Some of the most important traditions in Rwanda revolve around family, community, and religion.
