Founder & Director at B & K Consulting | Life Insurance and Retirement | Ongoing pursuit of personal improvement | Perpetually excited about uncovering premium talent | Two ears one mouth
Have you considered hiring an Actuary Actuarial roles across the life insurance sector are quite challenged at the moment. There is an oversupply of Actuarial candidates and an under supply of roles. A large number of Actuaries working in large consulting businesses are keen to make the move to corporate as the amount of work and cultures within those organisations have been challenged in recent times. The move to corporate is challenged as the growth isn’t there at the moment. I have always been very impressed when meeting with Actuaries, and these meetings were defining in terms of my desire to specialise recruiting in the Actuarial space. Reasons for this include: - Actuaries are insanely intelligent. - They also happen to be very well trained by virtue of having completed many years of study to qualify. - Development of communication skills forms part of their studies/ training and they are extremely articulate. - They are hard working, value trust, and have strong ethics. With a significant number considering the next step in their career and the sector remaining challenged, I have found myself pondering where there might be an opportunity for them to pivot. Options I have considered: - Data Science and Analytics - most Actuaries have invested in ongoing education. They have developed programming skills and the Actuarial background means they are strong in analysis and providing insights. - Quantitative/ research roles - I believe they would be a great pool of talent for the Investments world to pull from due to their modelling, analytical skills, and judgement. - FinTech and emerging businesses in the SME space - Actuaries are trained to solve complex problems, they are considered, and they work hard to deliver. The skills and attributes Actuaries bring are completely transferrable. If you’re looking for individuals with a diverse range of skills to solve problems, build something, or navigate ambiguity and complexity, I’d strongly suggest considering hiring an Actuary. #actuaries #greathire #transferableskills

Are you and actuary aiming for a quantitative risk role in London's insurance market? Here are five top tips to help you succeed in your job search: ❗ Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest developments in the non-life insurance sector. Being aware of market trends and regulatory changes can give you a competitive edge. ❗ Upskill Strategically: Enhance your quantitative skills to demonstrate your analytical abilities. Thoughts for 2024/25? As we come to a close on the 2023/24 financial year, bonuses have been paid and perhaps appraisal discussions didn't go as hoped for... now is the perfect time to start thinking about your next career move. It's fair to say the re/insurance industry remains extremely busy with the topic of securing top talent remaining a key objective for all businesses. I am seeing new roles on a daily basis across all levels, from analyst to c-suite within the UK and Bermuda markets. I'd love to speak to anyone who may be thinking about a move, or anyone who is generally seeking guidance and advice on the current market, be it around salaries, market trends, innovation. If you are looking for new opportunities there WILL be something for you. I'd be especially keen to speak to anyone who is actively looking or thinking about opportunities in Bermuda. With new entrants, new risk appetite, new strategies and an ever changing world of reinsurance, Bermuda remains at the heart of it all. The Emerald Group have build a fantastic foundation on the island, partnering with market leaders in their space who equally share in the interest of top talent, so I would be happy and eager to listen to your interests to make some introductions. For a confidential discussion around opportunities, please get in touch on 02038 615 171 or ross.watts@emerald-group.com. #underwritingjobs #actuaryjobs #bermudajobs #pricingactuary #actuary #underwriting #reinsurancejobs #bermuda

Strong technical skills will only get you so far as an aspiring actuary. Employers are looking for candidates that can think in a commercial manner. Commercial awareness doesn’t mean reading the Wall Street Journal every day, or even following financial markets. It does mean that you think critically about the impact of internal and external factors on a company’s results. If you can do this successfully, it will elevate you vs. other candidates. Some examples: • Increase in use of Ozempic and the impact on mortality rates for a life insurance company • Upcoming change in Fed base rates and the impact on the yield received on government bonds, and the company’s invested claim reserves • Big weather events and the impact on frequency of home insurance losses and severity of those losses from demand surge for raw materials Ahead of interviews, have a couple of examples relevant to the company than you can weave into any questions around commerciality. "Jenn, we've hired great new people but need to get them trained up by Q4 to get our team some long-promised relief." Most firms have ambitious growth goals and stretched-thin client service resources. That's not a good combination. What's your plan? ❌ Turn down new business ⬇️ Drop the bar on client deliverables ♻️ Abandon ambitious overhauls and encourage clients to renew "as is" 😰 Test whether the team can white knuckle their way through another busy season under-resourced Nothing changes if nothing changes. 68 account managers (12 firms) are set to work with us this summer to get Q4 ready by Labor Day. Will your team be ready? We can accept 15 more Account Managers into our June cohort. GenuineShift We build client service teams to help insurance brokers grow. Clients hire you to be led.™ #insurancebrokers #insuranceindustry #womenininsurance #employeebenefits
