Congratulations to our newest professional engineer, Tyler Daynes,PE! Tyler earned his Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from Utah State University. He enjoys working with water rights, water treatment, computer modeling, and computer programming. Tyler previously worked as an intern in Northern California preventing aquatic invasive species (zebra and quagga mussels) from entering Lake Berryessa. Tyler's favorite activities include snowboarding, hiking, rock climbing, cycling, and slacklining. #HALengineers #GP2W

Could bicycle use, aided by schematic maps, reduce carbon emissions? Researchers in the College of Engineering, UMass Amherst and the UMass Department of Environmental Conservation aim to answer this bold question through research, thanks to a two-year, $40,000 Armstrong Fund for Science grant they were recently awarded. “Research has shown that 60% of all the trips we would take by car are one to three miles, so there’s a huge potential for bicycles, or even e-bikes," explains Assistant Professor Jimi Oke, one of three researchers on the project. Because the literature shows a person's decision of whether to bike is influenced by connectivity and available infrastructure, the researchers aim to understand if providing relevant information in a simplified schematic map could help. They also plan to design a computer algorithm to create such schematic maps for other regions. Learn more about this project and another recipient of this year's Armstrong grants, which will investigate the genetic movement of Hudsonian godwits in a remote site near the village of Beluga, Alaska. https://bit.ly/45SVgmc #UMassAmherst #UMassAmherstResearch #ClimateChange #CarbonEmissionReduction #Biking

GIS: Improve business processes with digital maps BiokW - Environmental and Economical Valorization of Residual Biomass
#5 is real
5 more things I wish I knew before diving headfirst into the world of GIS: 𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧. You’ll start speaking in tongues but, fear not, it’s just GIS lingo. Welcome to GIS Club, where the first rule is: you do not talk about GIS Club… because no one else understands what you’re saying anyway. 𝟐. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬. Always during a demo, never when you’re alone. Nothing tests your commitment to a career in GIS like a spinning wheel of death in the middle of a leadership team presentation. 𝟑. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐆𝐈𝐒 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 “𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.” Expect to receive vague requests like, “Can you GIS this up a bit?” or “I don’t know what it needs, maybe just a bit more… GIS?” As if GIS is project fairy dust that makes problems disappear. 𝟒. 𝐌𝐚𝐩 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞. Forget about hitting the gym or missing arm day and say hello to your new personal trainer: Mr. Scroll Wheel. 𝟓. 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲. You’re not just a map-maker: you’re a peacekeeper and translator between planners, engineers, surveyors, and that “interesting” person in IT. It’s about more than coordinates; you’re helping others find common ground — literally.

All of us can make a long list of places that have been meaningful. We're a mobile species, and places get knotted in memories. - In the early weeks of the Journey in Place course, we're going to make this list. Meaningful Places. But then we have to choose 1 place that we want to study with all our heart. - The thing about place is that it can have many scales. My farm is a place. Where I live--the delta between the Ohoopee and Altamaha rivers--is a place, an area about 10 square miles. And my bioregion, the wiregrass-longleaf coastal plains of the south of Georgia, is a place. - I'll have to make a decision soon. At what scale do I want to explore? - If you have registered for the place course, or if you are planning to register, please know that you get to decide how you want to define and circumscribe your place. Be thinking about it. It can be a 20' x 20' backyard or it can be a 20-square-mile township or a 2,000-square-mile bioregion. - That is the place that's going to love you back. (Thanks to @crumbstarz for the drone shot.)

🦈 Celebrate Discovery Inc's "Shark Week" with a fun STEM activity on shark adaptation from JASON Learning! 🌊 🔍 Did you know? #Sharks can detect prey from great distances with their keen sense of smell and have special pressure sensors to pick up movements in nearby water. Their specialized teeth and streamlined, torpedo-like bodies reduce water resistance, allowing for fast, efficient movements. Learn how these magnificent sharks have evolved to thrive in their ocean habitats and discover the incredible #adaptations that make sharks the ultimate apex predators in our "Adaptation Lab" within our "Resilient Planet > Mission 4: Paradise Found > Stage 2." 💡 In our Adaptation Lab activity, you’ll compare and contrast how different shapes move through water. Through your observations, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how body shape plays a crucial role in survival. 🔧 Materials Needed: - Lab 2 Data Sheet - Waterproof clay - Fishing line - Paper clips - Large plastic underbed storage container (or stream table) Join us and explore the fascinating world of #sharkadaptations!🦈 https://lnkd.in/egw2gw8p #SharkWeek #STEM #JASONLearning #AdaptationLab #MarineBiology #STEMEducation #HandsOnLearning #ApexPredators
