What is Supply Chain Management really? It's the handling of goods and services throughout the entire production process. Let's break it down into six primary functions: fulfill, order, plan, source, transform, and orchestrate, the last of which applies throughout the first five functions. There are individual supply chain management roles available within each of these functions. Fulfill - This encompasses carrying out and executing customer orders. The tasks include scheduling deliveries, packaging, shipping, and invoicing. Order - This refers to all supply chain activities associated with customer purchases, including location, point of sale, pricing, and fulfillment status. Plan - This refers to determining requirements, identifying and sourcing resources, and identifying possible gaps between demand and available resources. Possible job titles include planner, buyer, inventory analyst, scheduler, and materials manager. Source - Obtaining, ordering, and delivering goods and services. Professional roles within this function include buyer, category manager, commodity manager, procurement specialist, and purchasing/sourcing manager. Transform - This involves scheduling and creating products. The associated activities include production, assembly, and repair.
