Before entering the startup world, I believed founders were the customers of investors. But I've noticed many founders act as if they need to submit themselves to investors. The truth? Get irresistible first, and they'll come to you. Your pitch deck is your first impression. It's your chance to showcase your vision and attract the right investors. "We receive a lot of pitch decks at M13. It's hard to stand out." Enter M13 RocketGuides. Last week at VC Platform Summit by VC Platform Global Community, M13 Partner (and former founder himself!) Rob Smith shared our interactive pitch deck template for early-stage founders working on fundraising. Rob explains: “Sometimes, there are great ideas that could be packaged more strongly. We wanted to create a resource for those founders. There are thousands of articles with "10 quick tips" to make sure your startup gets funded—I’ve gone through a lot of them myself—but we wanted to create more of a masterclass. Something interactive, not just an article you read. A choose-your-own-adventure where you can say, I need help with this or this specifically.” Built by founders, for founders, RocketGuides is one of our most valuable offerings—and the fundraising guide is just the beginning. Preparing founders for early-stage fundraises | Harvard MBA | Helped founders raise over $130M | Register for my November 13 Webinar: "How to Prepare for a $1-10M Fundraise"
In angel investing, the first “yes” is always the hardest—but it can trigger a wave of support if you approach it strategically. Ever heard the phrase, “When it rains, it pours”? That’s how angel fundraising works. The right early backers can set the entire round in motion. Start by targeting angels who are already familiar with your industry or have shown interest in your vision. Reach out to your network, ask for warm introductions, and look for investors who have backed similar startups. Once you secure a few key angels, others will follow more easily. When potential investors see reputable names backing you, your credibility rises, making it much easier to close the round.
