I help health professionals learn about Transgender and Non-binary health through training and technical assistance to reduce health disparities and maximize health potential.
In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said in a press conference before meeting with the Medical Committee for Human Rights, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death”. Healthcare systems have a history of medical abuse and experimentation on Black communities that have created justified mistrust of medical providers and treatments. These histories run parallel (and overlap) with the medical mistreatment of Transgender, Non-Binary, and Intersex communities. Leading to understandable wariness in accessing health services or trusting health professionals. I highly encourage you to check out last year’s See All of Me Medical Mistrust/Distrust Summit from the Denver Prevention Training Center to learn more about the source of medical mistrust and distrust for gender-expansive communities (especially BIPOC communities). Starting with the first session (https://lnkd.in/dS8WKJmx), Dr. Tatyana Moaton walks through a history of medical mistreatment and harm conducted against Black communities in the United States. #LGBTHealthcare #TransHealth #QueerHealth #InclusiveCare #LGBTWellness #EqualityInHealthcare #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQInclusion #transgender #nonbinary #health #wellness #healthcare #publichealth #sexualhealth #training #resources

Racial justice leader focused on philanthropy, grantmaking with a racial equity lens, advocacy, public policy, and centering lived expertise.
The last few weeks have been some of the toughest in my 8+ years at Funders Together to End Homelessness. I have the most supportive staff and board who have rallied around me and leaned in to the tough work. We strive every day to be more Pro-Black, Pro-Indigenous, and Pro-LGBTQ. To be a more liberated organization rooted in justice. Folks often ask what that means and this week we demonstrated what that meant by practicing radical community care and not shrugging our shoulders and ignoring the stress and harm being in principled struggle can create. We also are intentional about rest. What are you doing to lead your organization to be more transformational and intentional?

#TheTaskForce remains steadfast in demanding justice and accountability in addressing systemic failures in the wake of #NexBenedict’s tragic death. #TheTaskForce's executive director, Kierra Johnson, shares a statement after #Oklahoma medical examiners rules that Nex died by suicide. She shares, "...As a community, we grieve with and support those who knew and loved Nex in Owasso, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and all those fighting transphobia and hate." 🟠 Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/egYhkXqV 🟣 If you or someone you know is experiencing mental health distress and/or is in crisis, support is available here: https://lnkd.in/eNpeY2Sk [Image description: Against a purple background, the graphic reads "The death of Nex Benedict and reports that Nex took their own life continue to break our hearts, frustrate us, and anger us—this also moves us to action. Every system that should have protected Nex and supported their education and safety did not do their jobs. In the current climate, we know that Nex is not alone, as we continue to see attacks on trans and non-binary people, especially our young people. ...We ALL have the power and responsibility to create environments where our young people can laugh, love, learn, thrive, and grow. We continue to demand a full investigation into Superintendent Ryan and how the police handled this case. When we say the system failed Nex, we mean systems—at all levels and throughout their far too short life. We demand justice for Nex. Kierra Johnson. Executive Director. September is #SuicidePreventionMonth, and today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. Access to mental health care is an essential part of community health, and we work to reduce suicide attempts through innovative initiatives. We've partnered with The Trevor Project to promote a series of educational videos aimed at reducing LGBTQ+ youth suicide in rural areas of the United States. The Trevor Project's work towards reducing suicide in LGBTQ+ young people has been particularly impactful, and we're excited for this intersectional campaign to support #suicideprevention. We've also supported the creation of EmPATH units at CentraCare in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Sheridan County Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming, and Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana. EmPATH units provide calm environments where people experiencing a mental health crisis can receive treatment as an alternative to a traditional emergency room. They can offer an important entry point to behavioral health treatment, especially in rural areas. We helped launch Virtual Crisis Care, which works to prevent imprisonment or involuntary hospitalization for those experiencing mental health crises by connecting law enforcement officers to mental health professionals through tablets. When officers used Virtual Crisis Care, the majority of situations were de-escalated and avoid further conflict. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eEhmXuAi

PRIRE is about ending mass incarceration. Ending mass incarceration and over criminalization must be, and has always been, a central part of the movement for LGBTQ2S+ liberation. What we celebrate at Pride is an uprising against police violence and harassment, where queer and trans people asserted their right to live freely. Because the criminal legal system is a tool for oppressing and controlling Black people, people of color, low-income people of all races, and queer and trans people — our shared freedom lies in significantly reducing the footprint of mass incarceration while investing in the resources our communities need to thrive and to be safe.
