Port of VA will be picking up more reefer cargo business by receiving 2 new vessel strings from Central & South America carriers CMA CGM & one. There are brighter times ahead for the dry cargo market, expects DS NORDEN chief executive Jan Rindbo. ”In the short term, the next six months, we are still more exposed to the tanker market in the expectation that the high spot rates will continue. Looking into 2025 and beyond, we are gearing up in dry cargo and actually have a higher exposure to the dry market in that period,” says Rindbo. #shipping #oceanfreight #freight #business #finance

🎉 100 years ago, on 23 February 1924, the general cargo tramper Emma Mærsk left the Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. The vessel was to be the first of eight Maersk vessels named Emma, a name with a special story. The first Emma Mærsk from 1924, as well as the second from 1928, were named after Mrs. Emma Isbrandtsen, a sister of A.P. Møller’s mother. The last six Emma Mærsk have been named after A.P. Møller’s daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller. The eight vessels with the name Emma represent the major shipping segments of the A.P. Moller Group over time: One was a tramp vessel, four were crude oil tankers and one was a product tanker. Number five was a combined container and roll-on/roll-off vessel and the current Emma Mærsk was the world’s largest container vessel when launched in 2006🚢 “Shipping is full of traditions” – such was the first line in a 1985 article about “Six Emma Mærsk ships”. The sixth had just been named at the Odense Steel Shipyard, and it was an opportunity to tell the story of our tradition of using names related to the founding family on our vessels. A shipper’s lesson in existentialism ! _______________________________ It’s Thursday. Up early in the Scandinavian late spring. Had several conversations with vessel operators last night, which re-affirmed my belief that we are in for some continued mighty freight increases on all major freight arteries. Very interestingly. Clear appetite for not signing any long term contracts with shippers. Everyone seems happy with spot rates. Why change a winning team ? So how does this compare with playwright Samuel Becketts “waiting for Godot” ? Let’s say that shippers and forwarders are characterized by : Vladimir & Estragon. Vladimir & Estragon (like freight buyers for the next 4-6 months) hope that Godot will arrive… we know he never does. The shippers “wish for lower freight rates” demonstrate the absurdity of life and a Kirkegaardian existentialism around the “tree of life” and wearing their hats of hope… time is meaningless … there is a business saying : “hope is not a strategy” … that’s Beckett right there ! Slowly Vladimir & Estragon lose their faith in God, Society, Moral Values & eventually themselves (shippers are you with me ?). Ultimately… they cannot even recognize the inevitable… human beings are so good at hoping against all odds. But Godot is not coming ! DS NORDEN chief executive Jan Rindbo sees strong potential in dry cargo earnings as geopolitics and chokepoint disruptions introduce inefficiencies to the global bulk carrier fleet. “During 2023 we started to increase our exposure again to bulk carriers and we expect to get closer to a 50:50 split of bulk carriers and product tankers,” Rindbo told Lloyd's List. Following a strategy to reduce Norden’s dry cargo exposure in 2022, with a 75% emphasis on product tankers, Rindbo believes that high asset prices for tankers means now is the time for the Danish company to focus investment in bulk carriers https://lnkd.in/eMqjpCgM
