Reflecting on the Journey of Our Careers is quite enlightening 🤔 As we all navigate through our careers, it's fascinating to see how our paths unfold, often taking us to destinations we never initially imagined. From our very first job to the roles we find ourselves in today, each step contributes to our unique story of growth and discovery. My career journey, for instance, began as an apprentice at HETA at the original location on Sutton Fields, a starting point that at the time felt like the first chapter of a straightforward story in engineering. Little did I know, this experience would pave the way to fulfilling my own business. This currently is in marketing and branding at Kingston Branding a field I hadn't envisioned for myself at all initially. This transition has taught me the importance of embracing change, exploring new opportunities, and the value of the skills and lessons learned along the way. 🎉 This year holds a special significance for me as my daughter is due to leave school and start her college journey this year. Watching her stand at the prestart of this significant life transition has made me reflect even more on the unpredictable nature of career/life paths and the many possibilities that lie ahead for her. This reflection brings me to a question 🤔 How did your career journey begin, what did you aspire to do when you left school, and what do you do now ❓ I believe sharing our stories can offer invaluable insights and encouragement to those just starting, especially school leavers and those about to embark on their college journey, like my daughter. It's a reminder that it's not just about the job you currently want to do or end up in when you leave school or college. Life has a way of taking us through unexpected twists and turns, each with its own set of lessons and opportunities. I made a resolution in the New Year: to take more photos! Side note- I've realized I'm often the one snapping pictures, missing out on being in those special moments. But, being behind the lens shouldn't mean missing out on the experience. So, here's to embracing a new perspective! Looking back on my early days at Capital City College Group, I remember feeling a mix of nerves and excitement when leading employability sessions and work experience briefs. Transitioning from a role focused on sourcing placements was a challenge. However, those challenges have been invaluable in shaping my confidence. One piece of advice I gave a student really hit home: "Being professional doesn't mean hiding who you are." This insight helped me find my stride. I learned to prioritize transparency and seeking input from colleagues with diverse expertise when I am in need of inspiration. These steps has shaped me in to the professional that I am today. These lessons extend beyond my personal growth to benefit our work experience initiatives. Encouraging students to build genuine relationships with employers without being robotic and to ask questions if they are in need of clarity. Transparency in the work place promotes self-fulfilment as students feel valued for their identity as well as their abilities. The placement season is just around the corner, and to all my young professionals, I just wanna say what Monica said to Rachel in F.R.I.E.N.D.S, "Welcome to the real world! It s*cks. You're gonna love it!" I still remember my first job out of college. It was such a humbling experience. It did not take me long to learn that the real world differs greatly from the classroom. I made mistakes, felt overwhelmed at times, and had to step outside my comfort zone daily. But looking back, that first job taught me resilience, adaptability and the value of asking questions. They shared career insights with a room full of ambitious, inquisitive, and young professionals. They discussed how to chart career paths, leverage LinkedIn to stand out and get hired, and network to get ahead. The future is bright when you take charge of your path with confidence, determination, and a plan! Go for it! Way to go Heaven on recently completing your first Summer Youth Work Experience program! Through this experience, she learned that she'd like to know more merchandising when looking towards her future. "I learned about pricing, money, and customer service. I also learned that I like working with 1 or 2 persons but (also) choosing to work by myself so I can do stuff quietly. I'm looking forward to working with LEAP next about applying and interviewing. And maybe working here (Burlington) part-time or somewhere else."
